  • Southern Pacific tracks in Oregon City

Is anyone familiar with the trackage UP(formally SP)through Oregon City,OR, Especially at the (BLUE HERIN?SP)paper mill? I am currently in the process of modelling this area in HO but having trouble getting a good Idea of the track that goes through the paper mill.

Does anyone know the spur and siding placement/arangement or a good place to take picutes of the trackage at the papermill on public property?

    John,

If no one responds, will TerraServer be able to help you at:

The aerial photo of Oregon City is dated 1994.

      Chuck,

      Thanks for the sugestion.

It's wasn't enough detailed/ Buildings are in the way to see the tracks.

Their is a cliff next to the Papper plant so their is not a good spot to take pictures.

        John,

Yes, his name is Tony Perkins; he drives for Swift Trucking. He has done extensive research on the Oregon City area and South and he has shown me some of his maps. It sounds like you may know him too. I certainly miss the early and mid diesel days around this area. I wasn't much into rail fanning during those times (as I am now) but I recall what I would describe as the more exciting movements of freight and passenger service on the SP mainline. I certainly agree with our friend in Idaho on this Forum. Like him, I grew up in an SP area (in my case, Vallejo and Napa in the North San Francisco Bay Area), and I married a gal from Coos Bay, and I followed it up to Oregon. Memorable days from the 50's from the bay area included chasing cab-forwards (with my dad at the wheel) down the Hwy #40 causeway over the rice patties South of Sacramento, and our 2 AM trips to witness unannounced arrivals of nuclear reactors for Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Those were great days indeed!

Getting back to your request, I drove by the area you are interested in last night and I think I will also take some pictures of the area. There is a sidewalk along SB 99E which can be accessed at Main St. I agree that much of the track cannot be seen along the route because of the overhang, but I think one can get a feel for where things are. Of course, a good time to observe would be when they are actually exchanging cars. The area that you are probably interested in is in the the mill site itself. I can remember within the last 20 years seeing a switcher with a drag of cars moving out into and up Main St a ways. So, the question is where did the track descend into the mill area? I would like to know too! Let me know what you find out.

        Thanks,

        Allen de Jennings Lodge

          John,

I had the opportunity of spending a few moments on Main St in Oregon City today. Heading South on Main St across 99E and for about a short block in front of the old Publishers Headquarters building (just before the sign that reads, EMPLOYEES ONLY BEYOND THIS POINT). The tracks tell most of the story. A Switch engine would pull a string of cars North from the mainline or perhaps the business siding until they ended up just North of 99E. Depending on how many cars, the engine could end up in the middle of Main St between the downtown businesses. The engine would then push the cars back into the various areas of the mill for transfer.

From Main St, South of 99E, the track turns into parallel tracks plus a track which immediately goes off to the right. What I need to discover now is the routing of the track that goes from this main to the left; it follows an "S" throught the mill and ascends up to the siding or mainline. I will try and get some pictures which hopefully will clarify. Anyway, that's how I remember it from 20some years ago.

            John,

Here I am again, and I think I have most of the answers for you concerning the BLUE HERON PAPER MILL at Oregon City. My wife and I went on a little rail-fanning trip this afternoon and I took several rolls of film; lots of pictures from Molalla to Canby and then on to Oregon City. The entrance into the lower level of the mill is from a switch near Ka-nee-mah (sp?), a long walk from where we parked at the Vista area. The track into the mill parallels and descends on the river side of the UP siding and main. It is not always visible from above, but if you know what to look for, the outer rail is quite prevalent as you walk above. The industrial siding where chip cars use to be unloaded, ends just South of the unloading station at which point a scale car sets against the bumper. From Main St, where the track from Ka-nee-mah ends at the track in the lower mill, and looking South from 99E, at that track, it splits into two parallel tracks. Not too far up these tracks, and from the left track, a right-hand switch leads across the right track towards the river. The two parallel tracks travel South straight down through the middle of the mill. I also took several pictures from one block North downtown OC. I will get a second set of pictures, and if you would like copies, send me an e-mail. We had a great time although it was quite warm. For some reason, the Northbound COASTAL STARLIGHT was three hours late.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Thanks for the info, would love to get pictures  , am sure Tony would mine either.

Talk to Dick Samuel on the phone Wednesday and got permission to walk the rigthofway in Molalla to Canby. Tony and I, walk the rigthofway Saturday afternoon from Molalla to Liberal and Macksburg road to the Molalla bridge. Took pictures of Samuel's equipment and the rigthofway and the bridge at the river.

If you would like copies of the picture I took let me know.

                John,

I still have two rolls of film to develope before I attempt to get them to you. I ran out of film in my camera, so I took some pictures on my wife's camera and also on my mother-in-law's. Since both of those cameras have about 6 shots left, I need to use up their unspent film. The ones on my camera came out really well and show exactly what you are looking for. Yes, I would be interested in seeing the shots you and Tony took. I think I will also seek permission from Dick and attempt to walk the complete line from Mololla to Canby, maybe in sections. C U B4 long,

                    John,

Your pictures are ready; give me a place and time and I will meet you. How about the rail museum, the old station by the fairgrounds in Canby? Name the time and I will be there. [:-spin]
