My Dad passed away yesterday. So this one is for him. This was one of his favorites.

Rick, my condolences. Words never seems to do the trick in situations like this.
Love ’The Yellow Rose of Texas’. (Actually hadn’t heard it)

I'm with you. The Who and Pink Floyd are great, from a time when the musicians had wider musical skills. I also like early Elton John. His first album was fantastic.
However, for personal reasons, the #1, all time song is ....
Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers.
The greatest piece of music ever written (that I know about) is Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It qualifies as a mind-altering substance for me.

OK, a bit late to this party, but as a child of the 60's growing up in England I got to see my fair share of Yes, ELP, Genesis and Pink Floyd, you have picked out most of the good ones from them already. Was thrilled to find "Close to the Edge" on the American Airlines inflight for my trip to the UK last week!
Anyway, expanding on these bands, for years I would follow musicians as they moved about from group to group. One of my all time favorites is John Wetton, any of his solo albums or his work with King Crimson and most especially with UK http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZ5RgSPU3B4 what were they thinking with those outfits!
Asia has to be right up there as well, again a Wetton band, but this time with the greatest rock drummer of all time, Carl Palmer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa6DTeCTSZA Trick link as it is not Wetton on vocals!!!
Then for all you lovers of British Prog rock, the greatest band that no-one has ever heard of. Marillion!! They have been around for 30 odd years and have produced some amazing music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWFuzjqJYpY&feature=relmfu There is tons of their stuff on Youtube, well worth a listen and they are coming to the US this year!! I hope to catch them in Chicago. Catch the amazing guitar work of Steve Rothery on one of their best Easter.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8ZhN_qoI1s

Well, not quite - I've got several of their CD's as well as several from their early vocalist, Fish. Excellent stuff!
But, how about another Brit Prog band that also may not be all that well known: Camel

It's a long song, but worth every bit of time you put into it.
OTOH, thanks to Volkswagen's commercial, I've taken to waking up my laboratory in the wee morning hours with this little ditty...at 7 am it's maybe a bit much, but it does keep the neighbors and the riff-raff out,

In a time like ours seemings and portents signify. Ours is a generation when dogs howl and the skin crawls on the skull with its beast's foreboding. |

Excellent, there are not many of us in the USA, but those that know tend to be passionate. February 1982, I wandered into my college bar to see Fish and the boys play. Had no idea what I was in for and was captivated. I squandered a good portion of my college time and funds wandering the UK catching as many shows as possible.
