I'm wondering if anyone has any drawings of a coal unloading conveyor. I'm looking for one that would unload a gondola or a hopper in 1954 or earlier. It seems to be a tough thing to find, I have looked on model railroader, and google, ebay, even the gazette........nothing.
I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I'm modeling in On30, the drawings can be HO or even S scale, I can work with them.

Thank you for your time
Blackie

Unless I'm missing something, coal conveyors loaded from the ground level up to the top of the low sided gondola. Below is a prototype picture by Bruce (Dutchman)and a model next to it. The second picture shows unloading from gondola bottom to trucks, or other gondolas. A chute was use for men to shovel the coal from gondolas top side to the ground storage sheds. Last picture.

Thank you Bernard, Frank and Louis for your help. I posted a reply to the drawings, I now see that I could have posted it in the Quick reply box. A newbie mistake :(

Sorry for the delay in replying to this post, been busy.

Yes and no, this helps but I should have said in my first post that the conveyor unloads from the top of the the low side gon, into a small door at the ground level of the building, (coal dealer). I tried to upload a photo of the building I'm scratch building, but I get an error.
I'm thinking that maybe I'll make it more of a shoot, like the dealers would have used at a residential delivery (from the delivery truck into the coal door), and maybe a small commercial building.

Some where I saw a railroad model made, and they used the tape from an old VHS tape as the conveyor belt. I'll keep looking through my files. In the meantime you can check out this information; http://practicalmaintenance.net/wp-content/uploads/Construction-and-Maintenance-of-Belt-Conveyors-for-Coal-and-Bulk-Material-Handling-Plants.pdf

Model Railroader November 1980 magazine issue, I believe, has an article by Dean Freytag making a conveyor belt for a Lime Kiln. Same as a coal conveyor.

I found the one I said about using a VHS tape for the conveyor belt, it is a DVD called "The Appalachian Coal Industry" by Green Frog Productions, I have it, and it is worth buying it if you are into coal. It is a tell all information DVD about coal. It has a step by step on how to build a coal conveyor section. It is a demonstration on building a conveyer belt system as used by the coal producers and the end-users. http://www.greenfrog.com/appcoalDVD.shtml

Would that un-loader be like a conveyor under the car laid on the tracks that then dumps into a movable conveyor that can be swung in an arc to unloading bins? I do remember there being an article that may have been in Model Railroader. Can't remember the year though.

Bernd
