When I asked John Allen about buildings, he suggested they be small and tall. I have always tried to follow his ideas and look for small buildings.

One of my favorite buildings on the FS&M is the REA Depot shown here. This photo is a recent one taken by Dave Kruiswyk of George Sellios's orignal. The lower photo is of the new kit from Bar Mills Models which is patterned off of the FSM original.

Bar Mills Models offers this kit in both O scale and HO scale. I am going to build the HO version. This little building is about 5 inches wide and 3 inches deep. It is small but offers lots of opportunities for details.

Darryl very nice job on the new Bar Mills kit. Looks like you captured the FSM feel very well. I have built a few of their kit and have been very happy with them.

The loading dock is another very simple thing to build. I usually build these board by board but the Bar Mills people make nice loading docks.

Here is the top of the one piece loading dock. Nice colors and nail impressions built in.

Flip it over and add the loading dock rafter comb. This allows for great detail when looking at the model straight on.



The leg assemblies are ready to cut out, stain and glue in place. Very easy to do.



The cross bracing is cut from some of the scraps in the kit.

Here we see the loading dock in place.

The kit comes with premade steps in metal as well as a simply to use jib to make the steps in wood.



After the glue dries you can use rail nippers to cut the jig off of the steps.



I decided to cut a concrete pad out of some cardstock. I painted it a concrete color and marked the edges of the pieces with a very sharp pencil.

I then glued this onto a piece of pink foam. I then put weights on it to let it dry overnight before proceeding.



I cut the foam so it was 1/2 inch bigger on all sides of the concrete. Just enough room for a little scenery.

Someone asked about the REA signs in the kit.

There are several plus they are in different sizes so the should work for your application.
