I did some work modifying the Marklin cylinders. Modified only one side to see how it looks. the top needs to be filled in.
I think I will attach a cast beam and cow catcher.
I ended up filling the window openings in. I tried drilling, but the outside wall section was too thin.
I am going to redo the side fillers for the cab so they cover the window sides as well.
I fit the pilot(cowcatcher), pilot beam, pilot frame, and cylinders casting onto the chassis and smokebox.
I needed to do some filing to get it to fit. I also filed down the tops of the cylinders to their correct height and diameter.
The pilot assembly looks a bit long, so I am going to try to shorten it without weakening it.
I'd also like to add some detail to the front of the cylinders.
Next I'll fit the modified Marklin cylinders.
I want your opinions on which looks best.
Unfortunately I was unable to get the front of the loco in focus.
From your photos it doesn't appear like you can shorten the pilot very much. But whatever you can do will help with the proportions. Looks nice already.

Mike,
What do you think if I lengthen the smokebox a bit. Technically the boiler and smoke box are the correct length in scale, but visually it will help.
I think the trucks wheel base might be too long.
From looking at the proto locomotives picture and drawing it look like the boiler front is in line with the center of the front pilot wheel. I think extending the boiler will help a bit. It would probably be to much work shortening the pilot truck?

Bernd,
I agree, that is actually what I was thinking of doing. I have contemplated making new trucks, because the German ones seem to be longer than the US ones.
Or it might just be manufacturing constraints. I don't want to make new ones for this particular loco, just wanted to change the shell.
Mike, Bernd, and Bill,
Thanks for your interest and input.
As I mentioned in the previous post, I was working on an alternative.
I modified the plastic pilot/cylinders that came with the locomotive.
I reduced the size of the top cylinder and removed the German details.
I also added a US pilot beam and pilot.
What do you guys think of this version?
Scott, The cylinders look good. I'm not quite sure about the pilot.
I tried to superimpose the original loco drawing over your model. The results aren't that good, partly because the model photo is at an angle and trying to straighten that out added distortion, plus the black & white drawing barely showe up over the photo. Adding color to the drawing and taking it out of the photo didn't improve that very much and gives a false sense of alignments and misalignments.
Bill,
Thanks for trying. I figured out that the whole boller is sitting back by about a foot and a half.
Since there is a screw hole that dictates the boilers location, I'll add a short ring to the end like Bernd suggested.
Wow, June 28th was the last post. Time slips by.
Well Covid recovery has allowed me some time to work on this again.
I worked on the smokebox extension.
I cut a ring from brass tube, tapered a second smaller tube to fit into the smokebox and inside the ring.
Soldered the two together (rusty soldering skills), and cleaned up the result.
This will be epoxied into the smokebox.
To solder the ring onto the tube at the right depth, I modified my trusty piece of wood, by cutting a slot,
added some Sure tape, and used a paper clip to hold the tube.
Put in some productive bits of time in these last two evenings.
I didn't like how the patches turned out on the cab, so I redid them.
I shaped the cab roof edges using round nose pliers to fit the cab better.
I wanted to securely attach the domes and bases, so I drilled holes to pin them with.
You can see the .043 brass rod sticking up thru the boiler.
Massaged the fit of the smokebox cover to fit the smokebox extension.
The boiler needed some more details removed, so I filed them off and sanded it smooth.
Next step is to fill holes and drill stanchion holes.
Squeezed in some more time.
I did a bunch of drilling with an .040 bit.
Drilled the centers of the domes, drilled holes in the Belpaire boiler and running board patches, for a better bond with epoxy.
Drilled the .078 hole for the whistle and valve on the Belpaire boiler,
Cut out a rectangle from .040 thick aluminum, and CA'd it to the roof, to create a hatch.
Filled in holes on the boiler, running boards, and smokebox, with JB Weld.
