Good morning Jim, and all incoming crew. Thanks for opening up the lounge Jim, I have missed this for some time now.

Started off last week with what was a yearly oil burner cleaning service, that turned into a $ 8800.00 dollar new burner install. They found a pin hole in the tankless burner.
Well after a personal check was made out, they say got to wait a week or two for the check to clear. Turns out yesterday morning, the door bell rings at 06:45 for the burner service removal team to take out the old burner. Nice that they didn't give us a heads up.
Than at around 09:00 the oil burner team showed up to connect the new boiler. That was one of those, "What is the left hand doing?" Well after a few re-soldered joints for mistakes, and other stupid moves on their part. All joints were now leak proof, and the boiler was turned on. So far, knock on wood, the boiler didn't blow-up and still seeming to be working. I guess that's the working class out there these days everywhere.

50 degrees and rain today here in Rhode Island. I'm glad at least yesterday while the workers were here the weather was good and dry.

Wow, those kind of surprises, most people don't need. I've never heard of a tankless burner. Our old house when I was a kid, had a coal fired furnace that was converted to an oil burner, and years later to natural gas. That old cast iron boiler was still in use when I sold that house about 15 years ago. They sure don't build 'em like they used too.

PS you missed the breakfast burritos last week, they'll be back next week.

A couple years ago, there was a leak in the hot water coil in our heat exchange chamber. They couldn't get a replacement and it wasn't particularly repairable. BUT to replace that, they had to go to a new heat exchange chamber, which then meant they had to replace the air conditioner coils. And that meant replacing the outside compressor, since the new air conditioner coils were designed for the new kinds of coolant. $15k later, everything is new but the boiler :-( Fortunately, multiple repair people (from different companies) all said "Good boiler, worth keeping." But if I had enough time for a deliberate decision cycle, I would have seriously considered replacing -the entire system- with geothermal. Given today's fuel prices, the Return on Investment would have been sooner than I estimated it a couple years ago.

add: I replaced a conventional outlet with one that has a regular 110AC outlet and a couple of USB ports. Not the best designed item, I had to add a pigtail because this had only 1 set of contacts, unlike the pair the previous outlet had. Then the child-proof feature broke, so I've started the warranty claim. (I think we should issue kids with screwdrivers, and let the stupid ones be removed from the gene pool...) The nice thing about this outlet is that its USB ports are high amperage, so it'll charge things much more quickly.

Still, doing wiring (or plumbing for that matter) when old is a challenge, particularly having to switch between near vision and far vision. Sitting on the floor for a while doing this didn't help when I had to get up, either....

Had cast iron boiler experiences at my childhood home, oil converted to gas. Came time to replace it they had to crack it into 3-4 pieces to get it out and made a horrible mess of soot,, didn’t clean up well and sent my mother into one of those legendary nasty, mean, belittling rants my brother and I grew up with….she got a new indoor outdoor carpet job out of it. They were really messy and deserved the rant. She never treated any tradesmen with any respect and really was embarrassing to have to oversee any repairs.

Good afternoon to the entire crew. It is sunny and 61 at the moment in S.E. Michigan. I just came in from raking up twigs too numerous and too small to pick up by hand. Sill a bit more raking to do, but my body told me that 2 hours of that task was enough for one day.

I put the chairs out on the deck and front porch since sun and temps in the 80's is forecast in a few days.

Some reading, web surfing, and perhaps some modeling on the list for the rest of the day.

Good to see you back in the lounge, Lou! Not as bad as your furnace situation, but the 'repair' call for the spring on the garage door ended up with an order for two new doors. The double door in particular has been shedding its self-tapping screws for the past year or two. Each screw hole in the sheet metal has become oblong and I've been replacing them with bolts. I knew it was on its last legs, so the replacement made sense. Supply chain issues has us with an estimate of 6-8 weeks, but the rep who was here figured with the style/color we ordered, it would be half that. In the meantime, our new truck is sitting in the driveway. I think that it is disappointed in its new owners. Oh yeah, the cost for the two doors with installation will be a bit over 4 grand.

Talk about furnaces from our youth, when my father built our house back in the early 1950's, he installed a coal fired furnace and a steam unit. Boy did those radiators get hot! I still remember Kopper's Koke (coke) delivering coal into our coal bin with a classic scissors truck. About 6 years later, a gas line came up the street and that furnace was converted to gas and later hot water instead of steam.

Maybe calling it a tankless burner is not the right words, I don't know much about burners, but it is called a Weil Mclain WTGO-3 oil fired boiler with tankless coil for hot water with Beckett burner.
