  • Slow, Slower, Slowest!!

Is anyone else have this problem??

I click on a thread it takes about 15 seconds or longer to open??

When I post it does the same thing it takes so long to go through a few thread just waiting for it to post.

Yes; the new forum software has a lot of features, but it seems to me they put a lot of load on the database that stores everything. I have other tabs open so I go read something till I see the RR-Line tab finish loading. I know Joe has talked about faster CPUs, but they don't help with disk storage access.

Same here. Very slow at times. I also noticed the guest count. it always seems to be above 100 viewing. I've noticed on other forums I'm on that the count is lucky of it get above 50. Any chance that could be dragging the server down a couple of gears?

Guys, seems to be a nagging problem. and ive been watching it. next step would be to install SSD drives instead of SAS drives costs a bit of coin, but may be a better solution than my anxiety over it.. another way to go would be to move to the next Gen server, which i have, but that will increase my noise level in the office considerably..

Bernd, im sure the "guests" arent helping..

Thanks Joe for looking into it. I don't want you to spend more money if you don't have to.

I can live with it the way it is. Your a good man to help us out whenever we need it.

It's a bit slow, but absolutely acceptable. I don't see the need for Joe to have to spend his money so we can have access to our candy a second or two quicker.

Having a forum that's a bit slow is FAR better than doing without like we did for weeks and weeks.

Thanks Joe for dealing with all the behind the scenes hassles and $$'s in order for us to have this forum.

                      Joe,

I echo Jerry and Andre's sentiments. Like they said slower is far better than no forum. I can put up with the slowness also.

I'm just amazed at the guests on this forum versus other forums I look in on. We must be pretty popular. Could be because somebody said something about "railroad porn" and of course the search engines picked up on that real quick. (where is the emoji laughing with tears?)

A lot of the " guests" will be "web spiders" scanning our content for search engines, the Internet Archive, marketroids, various intelligence services, criminals etc. Joe has logs that may identify specific search engines. One way to control web spider access is a file called robots.txt, which tells the good guys where they should and shouldn't scan, and can request limits on the page scan rate. Joe isn't using this I am not a pro, so I can't say if adding one would help or not.

just because you put the robots.txt file there doesn't mean they will listen !!!!

Joe, I also don't mind the slowness and don't think you need to spend more money to fix it.
We're all grateful for everything you've already provided for us.

Actually, those long-lived logins and web crawlers might be better blocked at the firewall. Adaptive firewalls, that start cutting off connections that reach a number threshold over 24 hours, for example, is pretty "old technology".
