Group.I am positioning my refueling island, diesel track either side. Its a kitbash of the Walthers refueling setup. I was wondering how close does the sanding tower need tobe to the refueling island..or does it matter. I have a central tower with arms over the two tracks. Not sure if i should have it close to the island or back from the fuel island. Thanks.Steve...looking online there seems no fixed rule with modelers.

Steve there are many different arrangements as to where the sand is in relation to fuel. Here are a few pictures with measurements from the track. And a picture with a couple of yard arrangements. There are as many set-ups as there are fingers on our hands.

When steam locomotives had a single sandbox, it was possible to lay engine servicing out so a loco could get sand, water and coal all at once. But since that took several employees, it was usually limited to main line facilities where the loco stayed on the train. All diesels I know of have sandboxes at both ends, usually on both sides. So sometimes you see a facility where one elevated bin feeds 4 (one track) or 8 (2 tracks) hoses. A lot depends on how fast the diesel needs to be serviced, and whether multiple unit lash-ups are separated or kept together.JamesComment
