Good morning all, from 26f and overcast N.E. Indiana. The coffee urn has signaled READY with Gandy Dancer blend. The special is a Western omelet, Texas toast, and Grandma Sweeter's grits. The oatmeal pot is just about empty, so whoever gets the last of it, bring the pot to the scullery.

I had a pretty good day yesterday on the bench. I dug out three candidate engines for the 'keep alive' conversion. Two Mikados, one is an old BLI Quantum, the other an Oriental Limited. Last was an Athearn Cow/Calf pair. I was in immediate trouble, as the BLI hadn't seen rails in about 10 years. I put it on the test track and immediately wiped out the decoder settings. Decoder Pro wouldn't read the decoder. After finding a QSI archive page on the internet I was able to do a full reset to that decoder. QSI is 'dormant' as term was used. I was able to work that engine back to service. The Oriental Limited, was a DC engine. It's now DCC and sound equipped with the keep alive as well. The cow and calf is about halfway done, as the cal (dummy) will house the decoder and keep alive parts. That old motor might be a problem with current draw om the decoder. No sound on that one.

This morning I pick up my new glasses, and a stop at COSTCO is only thing on the agenda. My Optometrist is a very interesting guy. He's the same age as me. He worked his way through college and Med school as a Gandy Dancer on the Nickel Plate. The guy is a living history book, and my eye exams always 'run over' as I listen to some of the stories of his first hand accounts of that life.

    Have a Super day!

Good morning Crew and Jim thanks for opening. A gandy dancer story teller for the eyes. Sounds interesting. I will grab a diet Dr Pepper along with my 1st morning pill. Thyroid medicine to start the day. I will check the serving line after 30 minutes from the pill swallowing event. Fun with meds.

Success of a sort but major to me. 1st time since 11/30/2021 that I have slept under covers in my bed last night. 5 hours. The night before was above the covers but on the bed. Even crummy sleep on or in the bed is better then any sleep in a chair. Small steps…

Thankfully yesterday was a no low blood glucose event day. That’s great news. I have been really watching the carb intake and the dietary specialist suggesting maybe my meds were too much. 2 days in a row so far where the glipersise was reduced to 1 from 2 pills. Hips are still hurting and it not the lack of vitamin D. They say I have arthritis starting and boys it makes walking difficult at times. PT for that doesn’t start until February. The pool has water in it again so I can start on my own in there.

Lots of time at the workbench yesterday but mostly frustration with ESU decoders and the control system. All heading in the correct direction again.

    Enjoy your day
    TomO

It's basically a capacitor bank that is added on to a DCC equipped locomotive, if you hit a dead spot on the track, the locomotive will continue to run a few seconds. IIf the contact to the track is reestablished, it recharges the capacitor bank until it hits another bad spot. Hence the term 'Keep Alive'. They don't work on a DC loco, because it can't switch polarity on a DC only setup.
        Hope that makes sense.

Later and slow getting up this morning......but getting into gear now.

Hit Costco yesterday and got the haul into the Outback, just barely. No empty shelves there!
Got to break down the meat today.......

Everyone's getting worked up into a tizzy over the next storm front this weekend; treating the roads 4+ days early and all that jazz. Mon is a holiday so no one needs to worry about going anywhere until Tues.....

Hit the library yesterday and I'm all booked up probably for the rest of the month (kind of overdid that clicking on the reserve button thing, )

Wood is in and I'll hit the kitchen in a bit; lots of shop time today, I think!
In a time like ours seemings and portents signify. Ours is a generation when dogs howl and the skin crawls on the skull with its beast's foreboding.

Good morning, Jim, Tom, Mark and Martin. It's a gloomy 35F here in northern WV. Snow in the forecast the next few days with possibly signifivant accumulation. I'll keep the shovel and salt handy.

No specific plans today. Perhaps some exercise if the elements cooperate, work around the house, and modeling.

Mark, You know how any dirty track will bring a dcc locomotive to a halt and the sound to stop. A "keep alive" (one brand's name, I believe) is a capacitor on the locomotive decoder that provides current for a few seconds if the track current is interrupted.

I asked my wife if she remembers everyone going into a panic when a storm was approaching. She answered "no, I'm from Michigan." Growing up in the New York State snow belt, my memory is much the same.

I recall here in WV about three decades ago once running low on milk and driving a quarter mile to a convenience store, thinking as I slalomed through snow that roads were sort of bad. I only heard after I was back home that drivers had been directed to stay off the roads.

Good morning, all from the overcast and above freezing NH seacoast. Martin, our MLK Day storm is supposed to all run off into our plethora of streams. Also, I saw you in NMRA Magazine. Tom, I haven't seen that error, but I do see your post so not as bad as it could be. Good to hear about sleep.

Today's my birthday, dinner tonight with some of the family, maybe something for Seashore gets dropped off (heavy enough I'll have to get out the tractor). Last night I cleaned the sensor on my camera, today my LED order is supposed to arrive, the way is clear to actually start my first layout project of 2022.

Good morning Jim and the rest of the crew. It is that same 26 degrees in S.E. Michigan that Jim mentioned and it should stay fairly steady until dropping this evening. No real snow in the forecast.

Some modeling time, some jigsaw puzzle time, and some reading time are all on the agenda. Such is winter in Michigan for the retired.

          Happy Birthday, James!

          Have a great day!

I used to wonder what people did with the huge quantities of bread, milk and toilet paper bought before a storm. Then I decided what happens in the privacy of their own homes is none of my business....

              Happy day to James!

Today after some time on the exercise machine I'll work on the photos from our trip to Rome. I'm still pondering a winter project, besides the batch build of boxcars (say that 5 times quickly!) that is in part awaiting parts from San Juan Details (nee Grandt Line). I do have a nice brick (PRR prototype) structure I got from Micro-Mark at the NMRA NER convention last year.

                Mornin' All!

It's a grey, quiet 11, headed to 13, with a wind chill of -3 here in the northern mitten this morning. The grey blanket is firmly in place, and nothing is dripping from the heavens, although there are allegations that we may see some of that later on in the form of WGFA.

Happy Birthday, James, and many more!

Mike, I lived in Connecticut for over a decade, and it was fascinating to watch the panic... three inches of snow in the forecast and the lemmings were stripping the grocery stores, school was cancelled and so on. Where I am now, we can get seven to ten and they might (operative word) delay school for two hours to allow the road crews time to work and keep the kids from freezing in the dark at the bus stops....

The E7 coupler saga continues here. Yesterday I figured out what I'd need to do to body-mount couplers, bought some five minute epoxy and hope to get at things later this afternoon after the dermatologist gets done with me. Assuming, of course, that there's anything left.... And "figured out" probably is not the absolutely correct term... I found another ancient chassis in the shop, patiently awaiting a decoder installation, but with things made ready for body-mounts. Don't think it's been sitting there for more than about twenty years... <sigh>

Make it a great day, All, stay safe, be positive and test negative!

Grey monochromatic day of a modicum of enthusiasm. My “baby” is 44 today and we don’t have 3 feet of snow to try and get out of the driveway thru. Just as cold, tho, temp’s been dropping since last evening.

                    Happy B’day James, too.

I regained a couple square feet of my work area yesterday as the super-fund cleanup continues. I found a couple of those Keep-Alive units in the debris…

The top one is a commercial unit from, duh…TCS, the bottom is home brew. Mark, a keep alive is a conglomeration of small electrical parts that you stick inside your dcc equipped locomotive, the black milk can looking things, Super Caps, hold extra electrons it saves as you run down the track and then let’s them out to run the engine if you hit one of those pesky dirty spots that gives your sound unit fits…hopefully to allow the train to keep going instead of stalling and going thru the re-start cycle again…

TomO, I had a similar error once. I think that I’d started to link a pic and didnt but Carnack the Computer remembers all… and ratted me out. Believe I’d tried to down, or is it up?, load too big an image file but still it wanted something…was in a fem mood, wouldn’t take no for an answer

Good day all, be well, Save us some cake, James…cyber cake is the best…
