It's Plastruct styrene; luckily I actually had a pack on the shelf!

So, there's a skin of 0.010" styrene on the surface that the tank body will get mounted to using two of these ends. The corrugated styrene was added to the exterior flat side and then 0.060" square stock was bent around end block flush to the top of the corrugation. That leaves that skin of 0.010" styrene available for the side and that square stock gives the side something to butt up against. All of this was assembled using Goo and CA - Goo 1st, pull apart, add CA, clamp and weight and come back tomorrow. Actually had the ends in the big wood vise to hold the 0.060" square stock in place. Then I went back with a brush and welded it together more with solvent.

Now it's time to add the tank sheet to one of the ends; I expect this to be a slow & steady exercise and that the big wood vise will see use throughout.

Well, this was a bit of a challenge but I think I survived the experience. Had to work one end to the other....

1st step was to get one end in place; Goo and then then apart and add CA and back together and then in the wood vise overnight.
2nd step - Looked at just going to the other end but the corrugated styrene was too "floppy".
Made 2 more interior supports and put the 1st of those ~1/3 of the way from the end. Goo and then then apart and add CA and back together and then in the wood vise overnight.
3rd step - put the 2nd interior support ~2/3 of the way from the end. Goo and then then apart and add CA and back together and then in the wood vise overnight.
4th step - put the other end in place and secured with Goo and then then apart and add CA and back together and then in the wood vise overnight.
5th step - Still a little "floppy" between the supports so added stiffeners...

But I think it came together okay!

Drilled a center hole for the dome casting - slowly carved that open to accept the casting and secured it in place.

Decided to skin the deck in styrene so I could "weld" the tank to it...and add a few details....

That looks good, certainly a novel technique. I wish Plastruct would tell me the pitch of their corrugations rather than just give an approximate scale. I bought JTT's corrugated styrene in a store so I had an idea what I was getting.

That would good but Plastruct does what they do.....and it was what I had and it "felt" close enough vs. the HO kit material. Wish we had a store within a 100 miles that carried anything useful....

Body on the flat; Goo & CA, and then solvent around the gaps to fill. A few details and railing added,

Paint & decaling next after I get the decals made!

Alrighty then, calling this one done now! While not 100% happy with the decals, 110% happy that I was able to get them down into the corrugated sides and ends; took a day + per side to get each done and settled down snug.

Nice work! And what an interesting car.

Very cool, Martin. You did a great job building an unusual car.

            Thanks, Mike!

I'm rather pleased with it overall and I also have it in hand for those that like to label me as only building in wood.

But, now it;s time to move on to the next HO Ambroid or similar HO kit that was not available in O scale...............right after I find some space on my workbench,

              Martin,

I remember building the poultry and all-door boxcars in the mid-sixties. The kits belonged to my best friend who didn't get around to building them.

It looks like Ambroid made 22 "1-of-5,000" kits over about a decade in the fifties and sixties. You could build O scale versions of them all!

Not all are interesting enough to me to do that and all of the passenger cars, while actually being interesting, would take me a long time to do.

I have a stack of LaBelle pass cars to build to turn into my version of a Yellow Kid train......they surfaced from storage and may yet this year be the subject of what might become a lengthy exercise here.

                  Martin,

You know I was kidding, of course.

the Labelle cars sound interesting and fun. They would be a true commitment. I have a passenger car to do, in HO as you'd expect.

Kidding - yes! Still, it remains an interesting challenge that I will leave to others to indulge in......and there are just so many HO kits that there are no O scale versions. Sad since many would be fun and interesting to have on the layout, and maybe even more fun to just build!
