  • Translating Ambroid and others to O scale

Lots of nice car kits of "interesting" cars available out there that are just not available O scale. So, it's scratchbuilding time to get a few of these cars when I see one I'd like to have.... First up I'm going to work over building up the Western Union Material car.

Got the floor set up as per the HO parts and instructions......and the ends......and a piece of roof stock all cut to length.

Is Ambroid still in business? I have at least the first 6 or more kits on their 1 in 5000 series. If your looking for drawings I can scan them for you.

I think long gone now.... They produced a fair number of O scale kits, but a far more diverse range of HO kits were never done in O. The O scale kits seem to focus on hopper and caboose cars, with a smattering of others.

Thanks! I have the next 2 after this 1 sort of lined up now -- after those looking at maybe the helium car and the dry ice car.

I'm probably overthinking this car already looking to directly translate from the HO parts and plans.....Click image for larger version

Notching out the floor and roof sections for the doors to slide in as per the Ambroid instructions scaling to O.

Nice scratch building on your part, the interesting part will be if all scratch building parts can be found these days. Seems like us scratch building folks are a dyeing breed, left with no parts made anymore to satisfy our needs.

I'm not having any real challenges in finding supplies, but then again the basic stuff - wood parts and scale strip wood - is already in my shop. Detail parts can be the issue but I seem able to find what I need and if I can, I cast my own parts that I use frequently. I have a pretty extensive stock of parts and rather a lot of traction modeling parts that I periodically purge myself of the excess upon completion of a project or 3.

Fortunately, both Grandt Line and Tichy parts are readily available, or at least that has been my experience. Wiseman and PSC have a lot of basic detail parts I use.

Both sides in place and now getting the doors built up and installed so that they slide in those slots...

I see from the location of the brass steps the doors must be offset. Any reason for that?
