Try The Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Online Catalog http://memory.loc.gov/pp/pphome.html. This site is great when you search for things like railroads or piers.

I found this collection at the Internet Archive, be searching the tern railroad engineering.

Of interest is the American railroad journal, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has in full volumes from the mid 1800's through at least 1920 on microfiche, which was scanned.

I model the NYC at Corning NY (Penn Div) and here is the article about the building of the engine facility there;

A very good source for looking for prototype info from the early 20th century when many of the bridges and main facilities were of Americas railroads were built.

I have been contributing to my local university archive- including railroad and railroad-related industry photos. At Texas A&M University Corpus Christi. They are not online yet, but here are some samples.

From the Kircher family album at Violet, Texas. ca. 1915 photo of the family, their field and crop, and the Texas Mexican Railway in the background with a Nacionales de Mexico locomotive confiscated by US investors to settle a financial default of some sort by a railroad operation in Mexico.

I found some of the pictures in, of all places, an Oregon Company calendar. The other guys in the shop were astounded by the size of the trees!

This seems like a good place to note the results of my interactions with the New York Public Library and their digital photo archives.

The collection is large and great fun to browse but the pictures you can download are fairly small and low-res - useful but kind of frustrating for modeling purposes.

The higher-resolution versions are expensive. The charge to download one picture is $35. I'm sure that's reasonable but I didn't find anything in the collection that I needed badly enough to pay for.

There are an awful lot of alternatives sources that I would check before paying for downloads.

Canada Science & Technology Museum - http://www.sciencetech.techmuses.ca. Many builders' photographs and 8X10 photographic copies of erecting cards for Canadian Locomotive Company products available.

Library & Archives Canada. http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca

Merilees photograph collection

The de Golyer Library at Southern Methodist University, http://www.smu.edu/cul/degolyer/, has a substantial collection of Baldwin Locomotive Works specification sheets and erecting drawings available as well as the railroad photograph collection of Everett de Golyer, Jr.

Exporail, http://www.exporail.org, the archives of the Canadian Railroad Historical Association, has builders' photographs and erecting drawings for Montreal Locomotive Works products along with a large collection of Canadian Car & Foundry photographs and data.

The Hagley Museum and Library has already been mentioned but not noted is the fact that they have a substantial collection of Vulcan locomotive photographs and drawings.

If anyone knows of a source for Davenport Locomotive Works photographs and drawings, I would be very interested. A 1914-built Davenport 0-6-0 is the only Pacific Great Eastern steam locomotive for which I have not been able to locate an erecting drawing.
