Now that Lightmanns is finished I have 'itchy fingers' again already.

One of the things I have wanted to build for some time now is a light house. This started when I first saw Shapters Point on Laurie Greens site 3 or so years ago when I first got into this. This desire was again re-ignighted when the same structure was built excellently in the 1 square foot challenge last year.

I searched around the net tonight and came up with a couple of proto's that I liked. This build will be more of an adaptation/interpretation and merger of these proto's than an exact model of either.

This build will also run in tandem with a bunch of other structures I have in mind to build for a town scene so it may drag on for a little while but I find that posting progress to the forum is a great motivation and source of ideas and sugestions, basically it helps me muddle through.

The structure I have in mind is this one...although I do plan to change several features of the prototype, for the better .

I also plan to place the stucture on this type of base, instead of the beach.

Well enough of my ramblings, time to do some planning.

    Regards,

    Karl.A

hmmmmm, OK scrap that, change of plan ... yes already.

I think I'd better stop looking online and get a pen and paper out instead.

Wow what great photos and plans. What's the resource? And where is that first lighthouse located?

Karl, I will be keeping up with your progress. The lighthouse will certainly be a scratch-building challenge.... different shapes and textures than a standard build. Danny

                Hi Karl:

I like the first one. It has a lot of character. Let me know what you think. Also will probably fit in better due to it's smaller size.

                Karl S.

Karl, I agree with Karl S. The very first photo is my favorite. In fact, I like the entire scene including the other buildings. Danny

Karl, you've been on a modeling tear. Keep it up. I'll happily follow along on this build regardless of which lighthouse you end up building.

                      This is the resourse

                      http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/habs_haer/

I entered "lighthouse" in the search box (top left)

I too was first drawn to the first one, the only thing about it is the square tower (which may become pentagonal). The third one is just a layout idea I may use using main componants from the first two. I'll sketch something later today.

Thanks for the input and ideas.

I just had to check this topic, Karl. See what was up, ya know.....

The first one really caught my eye, but I agree with you about the square tower. It may be easier to construct, but a pentagonal one would look neater.

I think many of us agree that the first lighthouse that Karl (UKguy) posted is a winner

The lantern is a 10-sided polygon (decagon).

Here's a link to the plans and photos.

I think I will transfer these to my CAD program [:-smile_green]

I, too, would vote for the first one, Karl, but I agree with the idea of replacing the square tower with a pentagonal one. There was a very nice pentagonal lighthouse in Disney's movie "Pete's dragon", which also shows a very nice New England style fishermen village. If you have access to a DVD of this movie, you could make some inspirationnal snapshots.

Well, guiding light.. showing the way.. a lighthouse seemed quite fitting, for me anyway.

Thanks for the input everyone, I have settled on the first structure sitting on the circular stone wall base from the second structure. This will enable me to build the lighthouse sitting on the stone pillars for interest but with a more eye catching base than 'just sitting on the beach', best of both worlds I think.

Here is a rough mock up of the subwalls, as we have discussed the tower will change, most likely to a pentagon.

I did change the roofline in the back corner as I didnt like the original, would this be called protobashing?

The next post will detail the siding process for Pat as he asked in another thread.

                              Take care and be safe,
