  • Anyone Freecycle?

Due to a couple mentions and seeing FSM1000 has a request in another topic, I wanted to mention Freecycle. For those who have not heard of it, it is an internet based place where people if like mind can agrree to give items they don't want to those who do. The basic idea is to keep stuff out of the landfill and to provide a service to others who want our junk. There are over 3700 different groups in several countries so if it might be interesting, take a look at

http://www.freecycle.org/ I found it a pretty amazing place. Since I have been moving here and there, I have been using it more to rid the closets of stuff but it also has lots of possiblities for getting some good stuff as well. Things like old electronics for parts, old blenders for making ground foam, scrap blueboard. Well, you get the idea. [:-apple] Be advised it may swamp your inbox if you sign up for all the e-mails but you can get just a review sent as well.

My wife has played with the freecycle thing, sent me to pick up an old dresser once. It was an oak antique painted ACL purple. I ended up putting it in our antique booth and it sold within a week.

Once saw an ad in our local freecycle, a family had all had the flu and the breadwinner didn't get paid for 4 more days and was out of toilet paper, did anyone have any extra. HAve seen everything from garage sale junk to computers to cars and motorcycles.

I agree with Karl. There are some things offered or asked for that are totally amazing. I've offered up some really good stuff and some really bad stuff that people still wanted. How about a hollow core door that had set in water so that it had come apart. The man wanted it for a shelf and was willing to cut it down to the good part. My 35mm camera went quick to astudent, the fireplace doors with the broken glass was a little slower. Right now a party is asking for a used travel trailer but the response seems rather weak. LOL

I was following our local Freecycle a while back. It's an interesting concept that seems to have regular followers. It was fascinating to see what people were giving away, but I lost interest since nothing listed interested me and I'm a pack rat and never get rid of things. My wife did pick up a bunch of children's books for our granddaughter, but I think she's quit following it too.

We have a local one that has a YahooGroup with over 1500 members. I've given away some stuff I probably would have taken to the dump - a bathroom vanity, bathroom lamp, mirror, a winter parka, even an old air compressor that I no longer used, etc. I still check the site out regularly to see if there is anything I can dispose of.

Most of the posts these days are for people looking for something, a sort of "gimme this, gimme that". I see numorous posts where people say the items they offered were supposed to be picked up but weren't. Seems many just cruise the list looking for freebies and often change their mind and don't even bother to tell the givers that can't or won't pick up the freebies.

Our youngest son had an old wood stove in the basement of the home they bought, and didn't need it. It couldn't legally be used in a home because it did not have a CSA (Canadian Standards Association) label on it. It weighed several hundred pounds. He offered it on Freecycle, and a fellow and his sons came and picked it up, had the brute strength and ramp to their pickup truck. Worked great for eveyrone. He wanted it for a camp.

Great way to get rid of stuff at times!

Actually it was at freecycle that I got my sony camcorder. I was hoping it would be a model RR but it was not to be. Anyhow, as soon as I can afford tapes [or get some for free? ] I will be shooting video tutorials if any one is interested.
My old website is still here though not much in activity. I hope you enjoy it anyhow

You can't get it free if you don't ask! There are some real creeps that want anything they can get free. We all know that, but at least it does get it out of your place if it is really something you don't want. I see some really nice stuff going to the trash and some I might like to pick up but am put off by attitudes about that. As to the car, you might want to break it down and ask for a few pieces at a time.

It also helps to give stuff first. We gave a loveseat and chair and other things. It makes people realize you are not just asking only. However, there are a lot of people unemployed who just need things for now. I seen that it helps a lot of people.

Go to google and type in freecycle. There are a few of them around.

                  I hope that helps.
