Modular Club Layout Question

Here's a question for those of you in a modular club. We have our first showing of our HO modular Layout in October, and the space provided for our layout will mean that we cannot use all our modules.

How do you decide diplomatically which modules to use? Some of us have two modules that must stay together, other have single ones.

How about assigning each module a number and pick numbers out of a hat. The ones that don't get picked this time aotomatically get used during the next show.

I like Rick's idea. At our club, we usually draw cards for positions on operation's night. Normally, everone gets an opportunity to choose what they would like to do. If there is more than one pair of modules, then they can have their own drawing. If not, maybe there is one (last person drawn) who would like to yield to the person with the pair and gain a sure place at the next showing.

Actually, the local NMRA division has three different scaled modular groups. I think they have one "extra" module that is sceniced, but rather plain-jane and if they end up with an odd number, they can use it to make the layout work. At least, the HO group does that. The N scale group has a module that has a backboard that displays all the different sizes of track (hence the different scales available to model in), which has proven to be quite interesting to the public, I'm told. It's not sceniced and not in the theme of that layout, but does a great service to the public. Probably has hooked a few new model rails in the process....

How about having the extra modules around the perimeter with some filecard notes on the unused modules describing items of interest, and letting the owners have first operating rights on the engineer's call board for the layout.

The solution presented itself. One member with three modules never got them ready in time, and another member who wasn't going to be ready had one ready, so we just rearranged a couple of modules and ended up with 4 corners and 10 straight modules. We had our first dry run this weekend and trains ran smoothly and after installing backdrops all around, it looked great!

We show in two weeks. Yikes!

I will get some photos next week. I took some of the club setting up for the trail run.

This weekend I will be taking many pics as we are showing the layout for the first time. It is no where near done, but what's a few blank modules in a layout?

Rightly or wrongly , we tend to go with seniority at our club if a choice has to be made . It isn't a perfect solution , but what is ? BTW , I'm one of the newest members so will be left out if it is deemed necessary . No big deal .

We had out first public showing of the layout yesterday and it went great!
