  • Stoney Creek Designs

I just finished viewing the pics of the Stoney Creek products online and they look really interesting.

    http://www.stoneycreekdesigns.com

But apparently their products go for upwards of 150 bucks and it seems like they like to keep everything sold out as much as possible.

Does anybody have any experience with these kits? If so, I'd appreciate a review, rating them on quality of materials, detail, ease of construction, instructions and anything else that would be pertinent.

Bottom line: are these kits as good as the pics suggest?

    Sam,

Both Frank Bernard and myself(there may be others, but I'm unaware of them) have bought Stoney Creek's last kit Johnson's Leatherworks and we both rate them highly.Frank hasn't started his yet and I've only painted the hydrocal walls so we haven't got much to show yet,but here is a photo of progress so far.

This topic has come up before and I have already posted this photo before,so I apologize for repeating myself, but I don't have anything new to show at present.

$150 is about the right price for these kits because you get alot of building for your money. The reason they are all sold out is that Roger Malinowski usually only produces one kit a year and,I believe, limits the number to about 100.He usually has them ready for the Narrow Gauge Convention in September, only last year he couldn't meet the deadline.I had mine on order from Valley Model Trains from November and finally received it in March(I think).I am looking forward to getting back to building it,but I'm waiting for some egg tempora paint to arrive at my local art shop before I can continue.

With regard to your other questions,I don't think there will be any problems with the construction,it all looks straight forward enough, however, don't expect to be overwhelmed with instruction books a la Sierra West. There is just enough information on the sheets to get the job done.Roger doesn't waste effort in giving more than you need!He doesn't hold your hand while you are building the kit,if you get my meaning.

Obviously I can't comment on the new kits ,but if they are anything like the one I've got then I can recommend them,if you can find space for them.I would guess that both of the new kits will be less than $150,but that is pure supposition and we will have to wait and see when he announces the prices.I hope this reply helps,

      Sam,

I do not know anything first hand about Stoney Creek Designs. I have heard a lot about them & it has all been good. There was a big demand for their Johnson's Leatherworks & if I had been interested in O Scale when it came out, I would have bought one.

I would like to know from those who have bought one of his kits if there is any detail casting with it. None are pictured with their 2 kit on their website.

        Paul,

There are no extra castings supplied with the kit.All that is supplied are those that are required to finish the building i.e smokestacks etc.

I e-mailed Roger Malinowski and he said the price of Hodges will be about $100 & ACME will be about $200.

I have reserved & put down a deposit on Hodges Drug & Chemical. It will fit into a diorama I am planning with Tom Yorke’s Store Front Kit & Crystal River Products’ Mercantile structure kit

I am thinking about reserving The Acme Dynamite. What do you guys think of it?
