  • Greetings

    Hello everybody.

My name is JIM and I am new to On30. As such I am sure to ask a lot of questions and generally bur you all a lot. Please forgive me. My experience has all been in HO. I have been out of the hobby for some time and am just now returning to it. I don't have any of my old stuff so I get to start out new.

I am in the planning stages of a new layout. 14X18. I plan to use DCC. I haven't settled on which Digitrax to get yet but it will be Digitrax.

I am very glad I found you all.

    Jim,

Glad you found this forum, it is more active with modeling than the Yahoo groups and the format is better. Modeling is actually discussed.

      Welcome Jim,

Bug away, we like questions! That a nice size layout you've got planning. I'm using a Zephyr with a DT400. How many locos are you planning on running?
      Cheers,

Thanks for the welcome Harold and Steve.

Steve: as many as I can.[:-jump2] But seriously probably no more than 10 or 12. I probably will only be running no more than 4 or 5 at any one time.

          Welcome.

Sounds like my story exactly, right down to using digitrax (that Bachmann shay is sure cool with the soundtraxx decoder).

I too am an old hoer who came back just recently cuz the ON30 stuff is just too cool to pass up.

This forum is THE place to be. These guys are great. I haven't found any other group on the web that even comes close.

            Welcome to the forum Jim,

I'm pretty new to On30 too so let's learn together and even though I have a Roco/Lenz DCC system I will talk to you about DCC as well!

Welcome , Jim . There are several experienced On30 guys here ...I'm not one of them , yep , still have a ton of $ in HO and will continue to run it . Many of us are looking at On30 partly as a result of a Forum survey some months back where the 'other' scale of choice was unanimously On30 .Your namesake Jim ( aka Ano10 ) moderates this and he along with all the others are very helpful .

                  Jim,

Welcome aboard!! I am a new to On30 too. I still model HO with a local club. I will be building a On30 diorama to see how I like this scale.

                  Look forward to your input.

Welcome Jim, dont feel bad about leaving HO and joining us with On30!

I'm an avid N scaler in addition to my On30, your right the On30 is too kool to pass.

Good luck and post some progress pictures as you go.

Maybe you can start with a section and get in on the module challenge?

                    Regards,

                    Marty

Thank you for the nice welcome y"all.

I found it interesting to see where you all are from. Australia, California, Kansas (just over the border from me), Arkansas, Florida and the UK. I am from Oklahoma. Thats what I love about the web. The world wide community.

I think Bachmann will be the catalyst for many that have left the hobby to return. Funny really. When I modeled in HO, I built it to look like narrow gage. The look without the gage. I still have my MDC shay. Thats all I have of my HO days. I like the price range and the model range and I have always wanted to model 1/4 scale. I did do some scratch building of some 1/4 scale engines out of brass a long time ago. Cabs and boilers for a C16. I will have to have another go at it when I get going.

                      Have a great day y"all

                      JIM

                        Jim,

Looks like you have a possible On30 conversion sitting in that MDC shay. Have you seen the replacement cabs from Banta? I have one on my C-16, looks great.

It seems that any of the Digitrax systems would work for your layout and loco requirements. As a test I tried to overload my zephyr last night. I have 3 decoder locos, a porter, a sound shay, and the C-16. I also put all of my non decoder HO stuff on the layout, 11 locos. It ran them all with no problems. That's on 2.5 amps, so I think any of them will run all the locos you can get.
                        Cheers,

                        Steve

I don't think I will convert the MDC shay. Sentimental stuff.

Thanks for the DCC input. A question. Do you think the difference in the feature set make the Super Chief worth getting over the Zephyr?

                            Jim,

Welcome to the RR-L forum and the On30 forum. There is a lot of talented helpful people here willing to share their failures and triumps. (More of the latter than the former.) I am also a dual gauger in HO and On30. I do don't plan to give up my HO, but enjoy the posssibilites of On30.

One of the unique capabilities of this forum is being able to post photo's directly from your hard drive. There is a tutorial in the Photography forum for posting pictures.

So again welcome aboard and jump in and get your feet wet.
