  • Kind of funny happening at LHS

My youngest son, 33, was down to visit this past weekend and asked to go to a local hobby shop to see what they had in model railroading stuff. This was HobbyTownUSA which of course carries a lot more than just model railroading items.

We walked to the back of the store where the model railroading items are and they have a rather nice N scale layout which is about 2' by 3', multi level with a number of tunnels and such. There was a GP??? plulling a string of freight cars around on the lower level as we watched.

It entered a tunnel and about a minute later a loco that looked just like that one came barreling out of another tunnel near the back and higher up. About that time a clerk came by and got all agitated exclaiming "It did it again!"[:-bigmouth]

Yes the loco had dropped the cars in the tunnel and ran merrily on it's way. He tries to get at the throttle which is behind a plexiglas panel by sticking a pencil through an access hole which didn't work. So he used the ole, grab it of the tracks method! :erm:

He the proceeded to try and rectify the situation with the help of another equally adept clerk. A short time later as we walked past I noticed they must have reached their limit of knowledge on the problem as the layout was now shut down.[:-clown]

Hmm-m-m! And how many errors can we old hands see in this situation? Could it be that the store clerks were hired for their knowledge of model trains? Maybe the extremely accessible control panel is the result of good planning, m-m-m-m. Tunnel with no easy access for retrieval seems custom made for the famous Mr. Murphy.

      Sods Law.

No doubt the person who built it thought that it would be 'tamper' proof. It then operates OK for ages until someone actually looks at it and then all hell lets loose. Trouble is if the clerks have not been shown what too do when something goes wrong, then they take the easy option.

Unfortunately I've seen similar situations at train shows when the owner goes off to have a break.

        Rusty,

Hey! Consider yourself lucky, at least you have a HOBBYTOWN with some railroad 'stuff' . Our HOBBYTOWN [:-blindfold] hasn't ordered any railroad 'stuff' for ages [!] . The management and employees seem to have all kinds of time, and parts for model racing cars :erm: . At least I have several other stores in the area that are devoted to trains only .

Well Allan, I didn't say I bought much there. About the only thing I do buy there is an occasional mag, some styrene or glue. Their prices are high and the selection is limited. They expanded the store two fold last year and YES, it's all RC car area. They pushed the model train stuff to the back corner of the store. Johnny's Toys down in the Cincinnati area had the best so far and the guys running the department are modelers. Although the one fellow I have talked to the most says he's doing it all day there so he isn't very interested in doing it in his spare time. Too much of a good thing I guess.
