  • Filter for compressor?

    This question might fit in the general discussions section but things tend to get lost in the clutter there and I think this group will be the ones with the answer. I use my airbrush mostly to paint buildings, occasionally to paint rolling stock. With the hot humid weather I have noticed a few times when I get a splat of what must be water in the paint. No disasters as I have been doing work that a great finish isn't needed. What is the thinking on the use of a filter to keep water out of the paint stream? Also can you tell me what you think about regulating the pressure more than just using the Badger compressor without gauge, etc. I am going to be painting an engine and will need to get a higher quality finish before I do that. Thanks for any advise.

    Compressors tend to squeeze moisture out of the atmosphere, and then the moisture recondenses usually before it reaches the brush. The problem can be really bad in humid climates or during periods of high summer humidity. If you're having the problem, I would recommend getting an inline moisture trap/filter. I don't recall the exact cost right now, but I think they're in the $25 range. Using one will save you lots of aggravation in the future.

    I use a regulator that I got from MicroMark. It's not the fanciest (or perhaps the most accurate, either) of those available, but it seems to get the job done for me. I typically have it set to spray at around 22-25 psi. Switching from compressed air cans to a compressor with a regulator attached was one of my "smarter" moves in this hobby.

      Thanks Mike. I'm used to the water in the compressor as I have a large compressor for a nailer and such. I can squeeze and a half pint out of the air at this time of year. I'm southwest of you on Table Rock Lake. Just wasn't thinking about what a mess it would make coming thru an airbrush until I started thinking of painting an engine. I can always make the excuse that it was weather damage on any scratch building but don't think that will do for an engine. I may invest in a filter for the large compressor and avoid buying a filter and reg for the small. Still thinking it through.
