  • Good (no) Sunday morning to one and all

    Good morning all

Well we had a thunderstorm last night with plenty of thunder.[:-censored]

Today we have a fog alert because of the warm temperatures and snow on the ground. 8D

    Weird weather.

    Speaking of no sun.

How do you light your train room. Do you just use the lighting that is available in the area where you run your trains or do you have special lighting to highlight your trains.

I have read articles where they recommend certain lights for different effects and especially for those who take photos of their layouts.

I have a finished rec room in my basement with plain old florescent lighting which does light up the area well but I will consider setting up some additional lighting to focus in on certain areas.

    Have a great day everyone.

Good morning to you, John. And good morning to everyone else.

yOU ToO, rUSTy!! id="Comic Sans MS">id="green">id="size5">
Both dock de-icers are running merrily, stirring up the water (and running up the light bill [:-grumpy]). The weather weenies are saying we could have several inches of snow by this evening. Yep, all the signs are there: it's still winter. [:-shake]

For general room lighting, I have ceiling mounted incandesents. For layout lighting, I use daylight-balanced fluorescent tubes in shop lights. (They're GE Chroma 50's and are balanced to give off "daylight." They are great for photography. Paul Templar - aka "Shamus" - uses the same type of tubes over his layout. I believe his are made by Sylvania, though I'm not positive about that.) I also use 50 watt "floods" in track lights to highlight specific scenes or portions of my layout.

    Good topic, John!

Have a good day, everyone. You too, Rusty.

Good morning all! My weather is the same as the other Mike's, except for the dock de-icers, I don't need any of them.

I have thought about lighting, the basement has flourescents already installed, I was also going to light the layout directly, possibly using small under-cabinet flourescents, as used in kitchens, mounted under the upper deck to light the lower half and mounted between the beams to light the upper half. The layout will also have suffient lighting on it that I can shut off the room lights and run the trains using just the street lights, etc.

Well, good morning everyone! You too Mike!

We are snow bound at the moment having gotten 8.5 inches yesterday and expecting another 5 tonight! [:O] :yuck: Some of the windows you can't see out of from being plastered with snow.

Must be nice to sit at the lake and have nothing to do but watch your dock deicers working....guess that's retiment for you!

Right now I'm making new RTV molds for casting some new, smaller, stumps. Always have to keep trying to improve and expand the product line ya know![:-bouncy]

Lighting the layout, nothing special now, nothing special planned at this time. Just the overhead chandelier (dining room) but I may add some clip on spots as I have four of them left over from a show display.

Well I have to go be creative, hard job for a Sunday, so everyone have a great day and Mike, you keep an eye on those dock deicers. I mean we wouldn't want them to go on vacation or anything now would we?[:-clown][:-jester][:-party]

          Good day All,

Still sunny and warm in Texas. Weather forecasters missed the cold spell that blew through yesterday, a drop from mid 70's to upper 60's instead of the freezing rain. Maybe today.

I have been wrestling with the lighting problem for almost a year. The train room is a former formal living room and like Rusty has a chandlier. I have been using the portable Ott lights for lighting of the layout. I know that I will have to go to something better, but want to do as little damage to the ceiling (10 ft) as possible. It is still in the R&D stage. :erm:

          Have a good day,

          Jim

            Good afternoon folks,

Running late today. It has been a busy day already. We went to church and Sunday School. My daughter is at a bowling birthday party and I have to leave in a few to pick her up. The temperatures are in the forties with more rain. We had some thick fog this morning but it is better now. We had some water in the basement. I had to go out and shovel snow away from the downspouts and from along the wall in the driveway. Once we finished that the water stopped coming in the basement. Looks like I have to seal along the drive and the house this spring.

Did some airbrushing last night. Now all the undercoating is done for the NL&P Substation kit I need to think about the final colors. Also began undercoating a 2-bay offset hopper and a caboose. The hopper will be NYC and the caboose LNE.

Since my layout is in the basement there are both fluorescent lights and light bulbs. I nedd to install another set of fluorescent lights when I get the chance.

I hope everybody has a good day.

A few months ago, I replaced all those 4' hanging shop lights (8 of them) in my basement train room with ceiling mounted 8' flourescent light strips (5 of them). The change in lighting was incredible. Much more light now, and cosmetically it looks so much better. It costs like $150 all together, but man was it ever a good idea.

Well, it's Monday morning and I'm just getting on the forum. I only get on here when I'm at work. My layout is lighted with the regular shop-lite that I installed in the barn when I finished it. I don't know if I'll ever get around to special lighting. Hey ANo10! Where in Texas are you?
