  • Wednesday, A day to get down and DIRTY!

GoOD MORning RR-L Crew![:-bigmouth] Here it Wednesday already! We didn't get the freezing rain over night like we were promised! Let's hope the same thing happens on the rain for this weekend, right now no one needs a flood.

Subject of the Day: DIRT! How do you cope with it? NO! Not the dirt you puposely put on the layout to simulate ground cover but the dust and dirt that seems to drop from everywhere and lightly covers you structures, track and scenery in a dull grey dust!

My intentions are to drape a drop cloth over the layout. I'll use the backdrop boards to support it on three sides and most likely come up with some way to insert support sticks every two to four feet on the front. Hopefully that should keep the "Dust bunnies" off.

Well nothing else exciting to report on which is great! Welcome to all the new members, too many to name each one.[:-dopey] [}]

    Good Morning, Crew.

Layout is in my half of the garage. Dirt is a way of life! I have hung some plastic sheeting to reduce the amount that gets to it, but it still happens. Solution so far is to just clean it up whenever it looks objectionable. I'll be watching for some good ideas from the rest of the crew.

      Good morning folks

It feels good not to have to shovel or clear snow anymore. I have drifts and piles in my yard that are 4 to 6 feet high. I had to dig a path for out two Pomeranians. The one hates the snow the other can’t get enough of it and goes bound over and through the drifts. Now the concern is with flooding for the weekend since we will have milder temperatures and a heavy rain. The fun never ends.

I airbrushed most of the Northern Light and Power Substation kit last night with an undercoat. Now I need to seal it and start on the final colors.

Dirt is everywhere. No matter what I do I have it. I have a small vacuum that I use for big problems and a small handheld battery operated computer vacuum for others. Lastly I borrow my wife’s dust spray that she has for her silk flower arrangements.

I hope everybody has a good day.

        Good morning to all!!

DUST YOU SAY??? I live in the desert and my layout is in my garage!!! Dust is not an issue, it is a way of life. Makes my layout look realistic in the desert.

However, I do clean things up occasionally when the dust starts to get too thick. I also use a small computer type vacuum along with a more powerful vacuum with the really small attachments that can clean in small places. I also use canned air to blow stuff around so that I can vacuum it when I can't get to it with one of the vacuum cleaners.

Occasionally one of the local critters, scorpion or spider, will get on the layout and we just tie them to the track and run them over with a SD90/43MAC then vacuum them up also. They do not fit well with the layout as they are full size. Haven't found any HO scale yet. [:-clown] 8D [:-cowboy][:-devil]

I hope you all make this a great day!!

Good morning from the warm*, wet Mid West, it's been raining all night, the snow is melting and the puddle in the basement is getting bigger.

Dirt? I may just have to model a grimy industrial landscape, I won't have to clean then.

          * Note, the term "warm" is relative, after a couple of weeks of freezing temperatures 35 feels very warm.

Mild is the word here in SE Texas, weather is fine, Trailrides are going on, Rodeo's acomin'.

Dirt! We don't worry 'bout no stinkin' dirt! That's what the plow blades on the locos are for.

Seriously, once the layout is in operation I will keep the A/C on in the barn to provide a positive pressure so the dirt won't infiltrate quite so readily. An occasional vacuum cleaning should be enough.

                Good morning, everyone.

It actually warmed up a bit. But it's still winter. What can I say?

I don't have a problem with dirt and dust as much as I do spiders. [:-shake] They are little, spindley legged ones that leave little cobwebs all over the basement and my layout. Everytime I think I've gotten rid of them, they're right back about 3 or 4 weeks later. I have given up on insecticide sprays and bug bombs from the stores. They don't get the job done. [:-grumpy]

About dirt and dust: I am considering putting up a sheetrock ceiling when I finish the rest of my trainroom. And I have read on several occasions that painting a basement floor will help control dust. Unfortunately, that's not an option for me because there are no windows in my basement. The buildup of fumes could be lethal - especially with the furnace and hot water heater down there. [xx(]

Well, enough... everyone have a good day. You too, Rusty.

A nice track cleaning once a month, and a train pulling an Aztec track cleaning car followed by a roller cleaning car (dry roller, I dont use Goo Gone anymore) once a night keeps the track clean and conducting.

The little vacuum is useful after scenicking sessions to pick up stray material for reuse. I'm not a cheap guy, but gee, waste not....

Last night I dry dusted some NP 85' passenger car roofs. Didn't look enough like snow to keep, and I dont have any desert sceneery. Mr Nanny, I might take one them scorps up here. It'ld probably be in scale as a Minnesota mosquito.

                    Good afternoon all

Well it is 40 degrees and the snow is melting but not fast enough. :erm:

My basement has a finished room where the layout will go. I have a typical 60's rec room. Dark wall paneling and the green linoleum that was very popular in the 60's.

I do have a drop ceiling which will help a lot with the dust that would normally fall from the rafters but after that I will have to design some sort of cover to go over the layout.

                    Have a great day everyone.

                      Morning All,

44F this morning with scattered showers. Rain in the forecast for the next couple of days.

Dust: My layout is in a spare room in the house (no basement). If I keep the carpet vacuumed, I have little problem with dust. For the small amount of dust I do get, I use a dust buster for the track and main areas and a small brush around scenery.

                      Everyone have a good day,

                      Jim

                        Good Afternoon folks!!

Well, the weather here in the Ohio Valley is in keeping with the norm this winter - LOUSY!

                        [!] :erm: [!]

But hey, we're model railroaders, right...? We should have an extra appreciation for those days when it's better to stay inside!

The title of today's thread is appropo for me...I've been working on some scenery, & my fingers are covered with paint & sticky stuff...(my wife LOVES it when I track little balls of styrofoam all over the house, & then leave little smudges on the 'puter keyboard )

As far as keeping a layout clean, that's always an on-going battle...I've tried the dropcloth route, but it seemed like a big hassle, if you're like me & want to putter with the layout at odd times over the course of the day...

One of the best things I've invested in are those little mini attachments to fit my shop-vac. I have this little brush attacment that is great for gently cleaning tiny roofs & such.

Anyway, think I'll go have another cup o' coffee, & get to work on some N scale trees!

                        Have a great day everyone!!
                        -Drew-

                          Good evening all.

Yet another cold and dry day.

                          Getting a bit repetitive.

As for dust and dirt. Its not too bad because the layout is in the spare bedroom but the dogs too tend to get in there especially one of them as she likes the underfloor heating (pipes from the airing cupboard)!

I generally use a small brush.

Nice and cold here still, windchill makes it nasty with temps around freezing.

Dust: my girlfriend makes it with her sawing-thingy with which she makes those nice bears and stuff. I vacuum the carpet and where possible the layout. I have a railcleaner-car which i pull behind a loco for about five minutes on each track of the mainline. the tracks stay clean that way.

Good Afternoon 8D Sunny here in West Michigan, nice to see a blue sky!! I have just covered my Dads old HO layout to protect from my dusty, dog hairy house. I put 8" hinged sides all around which I will paint as a backdrop. Then got some lightweight poly/cotton cloth and sewed some sleeves across it for 3/4" x 3/4" supports. With the sides up the cover rolls right across the top edges, and rolls right back up again to run trains.
