  • Lee,

I can't say much, but there is a project in the works that might be just the ticket to go along with the SW O scale mill engine and boiler house.

Now Bruce, you know that we SW junkies have to have our hit of resin aroma, just as JR needs his dullcote.

      • Welcome to all who have taken the time to fill out this questionnaire.

I think it is time for Barry to resurrect his map for all the new members.

Ah the smell of resin from Brett''s kits is like the smell of fresh coffee in the morning.

Just can't get any better than that.

          • Hi Mike, You must go to a costume shop and get dressed up as a conductor and show us all the pic? as you bear real similarities to the clip on your mail signature!

It would make a fabulous picture,

            • Ah what state I live in, generally pretty tidy these days, it makes things easier to find! as well as a state of taking it easy and low anxiety as I retired early after thirty years operating a 1400MW duel fuel power plant in Adelaide Australia.

The nearest City now is Christchurch New Zealand, that is on the East Coast, I live in the Wild West Coast about 5 hours drive through the mountains to a little saw mill town called Ruatapu pop. 40. People call it Jade Country because the stuff is eveywhere, even in the road

              gravel.

I think my modeling started when Dad used to get out the Hornby three rail and the Mecanno at Christmas around 1953 in the UK

Later I began to collect Hornby 00 but it was pretty boring collecting black 0-6-0's and Pacifics till I spotted a brand called Athern and a love affair with ATSF and U.P. began.

Transition era seemed a pretty popular and prolific so I had about eighty locos in the stable back in 1990 in Australia

1995 my World turned upside down and I sold everything and moved to N.Z. in 2000 and started from scratch again. Now me and my Poodle live in my little cottage in Ruatapu I have a spare 25 x 10 room in which I am building a double dogbone on three levels to include something akin to the Keddie Wye trestles, a port complex, engine terminal, freight yards and various spur lines. Now at 56 I have time to concentrate on quality rather than quantity, having all the tools for the job is essential and don't intend to do any rush jobs, everything is glued and screwed with full carpentry joints. The wiring should be all identified and scematics for everything as I don't want to spend hours under a table chasing unidentified wires. (sleeves painted with Indian ink) is what I will use as the tag rings twist around and are too expensive.

I have a few trades under my belt including Electrical Technician, Engine Drivers certification up to 200,000 HP that gives me a real respect of steam power. Especially at 1500psi. and 1005deg.F.

The neighbors are taking a keen interest too, but I keep telling them it could be up to a year to see a loco running, besides my stable is pretty meagre at this stage, kit building and tree making is really filling in the nights now.

Winters here are -3 to +10. Summers are about 10 to 25 degrees C. a far cry from weeks of 35 to 48 Deg.C Sometimes it can rain for six weeks non stop so there is no guilt in spending those days modeling.`

That is a view I have to put up with from time to time. Better than a pic of me anyway!

              • OK OK I get the message. The pin map is located here. Anyone who hasn't done so is invited to indicate where they live on my map.

                http://uk.geocities.com/barry_pate/

Just click on "view my guestmap/Place your pin/click here" button and a map window should open.

Click on 'Hide Welcome Message' then use the 'Post' option to place a pin and fill in the details. It's pretty easy.

If you need to see more detail use the 'zoom' option.

                Welcome one and all.

                  • Hey Everyone!

stumbled across this and figured i ought to contribute...

                    2) How long modeling and how we got started

got an old 4x6 layout that hung on my wall at about age 7, modelled planes/ships/cars like a lot of you. got back into MRR when my father-in-law took me to his train club in Dallas and gave me a project. you know one of those, "Do you think we could make something out of this?" kind of projects...
                    quote:

i've been somewhat taken by the camas prairie RR of north ID. came about when two rival RR's decided it was better to work together than keep shooting each other... literally

i'm not a stickler for prototypical operations, but i love steam engines so i s'pose pre-1950's

no layout as of yet... attempting to locate a house without a finished basement. plans are for a modular approach, with 5-6 modules in an "E" shape

looking for folks who may be interrested in forming a "round robin" type club (one that travels between members homes to work on their layout)... since the only club within 1 hour drive is... how to be nice... not conducive to a friendly club gatering [before you point out the esteemed club at the local RR museum, i'm refering to them] any clarification needed please e-mail me.

                                2) How long modeling and how we got started

I have been modeling since 4th grade (1960) Over the years I've done the full range of genres, cars, airplance military, sailing ships, but most importantly railroad related.

                                3) What lines we model

My modelling interest are fairly broad, however I'm particularly interested in narrow gauge. Especially the East Broad Top RR. This is true since I grew up in Huntingdon County, PA and can remember the Eastie when it was in operation

                                4) years we model

                                steam era

                                5) how large is your layout and what scale do you model.

I live in an apartment and there isn't the room for a layout, so I build models with a railroad theme.

                                6) if we use DC, DCC or other

No layout threfore no DC or DCC!
