  • C&EI

The "NEW" Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad was incorporated in 1894...a consolidation of the previous C&EI and the Chicago & Indiana Coal Railway. The earliest ancestor of the C&EI was the Evansville & Illinois, chartered in 1849. Like other railroads, the C&EI went through many changes and acquistions. It purchased a number of coal mines and coal lands, and in 1913 both the C&EI and the Frisco entered receivership.

The Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railway was organized in 1920. The Van Sweringen brothers of Cleveland acquired control in 1928.

The L&N and MoPac acquired C&EI stock and petitioned the ICC for permission to control the road in 1961, as did the Illinois Central. From about 1963 to 1976, the L&N AND the MoPac had separate interests...and then the C&EI was merged with the Missouri Pacific on Oct. 15, 1976.

The L&N passenger service was known by The Humming Bird and the Georgian, among others. The C&EI had the Whippoorwill and the Meadowlark(and others).

This is only a brief summary of the C&EI...

    Happy Railroading...pass it on!
