  • C&S and FW&D pics


    Hey there,

    Anyone have any good links to BN pictures, particularly with C&S markings? I also am looking for BN stuff with FW&D markings.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

        David,

        I figured you would know, since the FW&D is actually the Fort Worth and Dallas area. The C&S though, that is Colorado Southern area. Both these areas were originally maintained by the CB&Q before the BN merger took them over. At least that is what I have been told. Though, I thought I seen the FW&D was acquired in the late 70s/early 80s. I DO know for sure that the C&S was part of the CB&Q system, and the SP&S were originally a Washington RR.

        If I come across pics, I will post them down in the Central States forum.

          The FW&D (Fort Worth & Denver) was "acquired" by BN in 1971 as largely a "paper move." (For the record, it was officially "merged" into the BN in 1983 -- again, a "paper" move.) In actuality, the FW&D was sold to the Colorado & Southern in 1905 (by General Grenville Dodge and associates). Even though it retained its separate identity (to the extent that it acquired several of its own Texas subsidiaries in the following decades) -- largely due to the arcane Texas laws regulating railroad ownership -- it was, in essence, a subsidiary of a subsidiary of the Chicago Burlington & Quincy long before its "acquisition" by the resulting Burlington Northern.

          Ain't history a marvel, though?

            I cannot believe I called it Dallas, instead of Denver. See what lack of tea does to me?

            LOL! The SP&S was also acquired via the merger, but was part of the system that BN took over in the early 70s. They also acquired the Frisco and Great Northern and Northern Pacific all during this time, among other roads.

            I am still looking for pics with the FW&D, C&S and SP&S markings.

              One other thingie about the BN. Jim Hill, who built the GN, had a dream to merge the GN, NP and CB&Q back in the early 1900s. The ICC (I believe) stopped such a move. The SP&S was created by Hill and jointly owned by the GN and NP, which also owned the 'Q'. The long sought after merger was finally approved for consumation in March of '70. From what I understand, it was the first really successful major merger of railroads into one really big system.
