    George Westinghouse invented the air brake in 1869. He was called, "the d@mn fool who thinks he can stop a train with air!" Prior to 1871, brakes on all L&N rolling stock were set by hand. In cold or rainy weather, brakemen generally carried a supply of salt or sand to improve their traction on the slippery tops of freight cars. Sadly, some brakemen were permanently "grounded" from losing their footing. By 1880, the L&N purchased and installed the first automatic air brake equipment. All of its rolling stock was equipped by 1914. The Westinghouse Company sent an "instruction car" over the lines of the L&N in 1893. Later in 1899, the L&N fitted up a similar car and sent it over the System, in charge of the late Frank Sherman, who pioneered in air brake instruction on this railroad. Mr. Sherman and his car, No. 360 educated thousands of employees about the "mysteries" of the air brake.

    Air Brakes got a different connotation from where I sit Mamam! Oh, maybe i reversed the words?

    Interesting info. Didn't know the L&N had such a major role!

      A lot of railroads followed the L&N's lead. There were not only air brake instruction cars (which often taught about steam engines in general) but rules instruction cars for trainmen and some medical cars that had a traveling doctor.
