Most of my time is taken up being a railroader which allows to railfan either on the way to work or at work!
Like Tom I have changed from being a 90% railfan to something considerable less since getting married (after all I did chase steam locos all around the world - I can't do that now though!)
Hey, ya could do a subway like John Allen did; push the button by the subway window, here the train approach, but it never arrives, jus' the noise of it. One of his tongue in cheek models. I think the guy was an MR genius.
After being an armchair modeler and history buff for years I started modeling in the last couple of years (first in N - too small, and now in HO). I really enjoy museums and tourist railroads (no robberies or fake cowboy and indians please ).
The closest I get to railfaning is listening to the CSX mainline traffic directly next to my office. I know others like it, but I just can't get into hanging out and watching modern trains.
I believe I am a railfan/modeler. Though, I tend to do a lot of both, I think I have more modeling years than railfanning. Course I have been watching trains since I was 2, but then again playing with trains since I was 2 too. Hmmmmm.
I am definitely a railfan first, modeler a distant second, but that could change at any moment... Back in the 1980s, it was the exact opposite... I also really like the historical aspect of railroading which is why I tromp around the countryside looking for old rights of way...
Hey Deb, speaking of inappropriate questions, do you USE your favorite beer ON your hair? My sisters did that back in the 60s...
