  • Rio Grande paint

I am going to be painting some "should have been" locos for the Rio Grande (AC4400's, SD9043MAC, SD70, C44-9W etc..) and i was wondering if there is a certan type of black paint i should use. there are several types out there. also, is there D&RGW orange paint out there? if not, what color should i use?

    thanks for the help.

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure Polly Scale makes a Rio Grande orange.

Believe it or not, 20 years ago I wrote a fella to ask about Rio Grande orange and he worked for the Grande in the Burnham shops.

Couple weeks later, I received two metal panels painted RG orange and yellow. That's the kind of people that the Grande was. Guy painted and sent me those from the RR itself.

      Wish I still had them...

Holy smokes! You got those sent to you and you didn't keep them? There has been a lot of discussion on the Rio Grande email list in the last few weeks on paint. I haven't been taking notes though.

Yes, Polly scale does and so do several other makers. The bottom line is that even on the prototype, there was variation on what shade of orange was used when they were painted, and there is fading and oxidizing which alters it over time, weathering, and if you look at photo's, it depends on the light and the film etc. So there is no definitive answer basically.

You are going to have to make some judgement calls based on photos and other information because you may like certain shades better than others. For example, some manufacturers like Lifelike P2k SD9s have a very deep orange which I don't like. Same for the old Atlas Roco S2 switchers... The Atlas GP40's (old) looked pretty good, and so do the new P2K GP30's. The new Atlas GP40s are very "yellow" looking to me.

It all boils down to matching the decals. There are three different colors of MS for the later stuff I think .

My dilemma will mostly matching decal numbers to existing paint schemes on Athearn GP40-2's, Atlas GP40s (Roco and new ones), P2K GP30s, Athearn SD40T-2s and NOW, KATO SD45's since they are only offering one number!

ok...on these locos, should i be using gloss black, then adding dullcoat, or just going with flat black?

were new Rio Grande locos delivered in gloss black?

also, where can i find a roster of all the locos that the Rio Grande had before the SP merger? I would like to use realistic numbers for these newer locos, as if the D&RGW were still around.

I have Rio Grande Diesels Volumes 1, 2, & 3 which have roster info if you need. If you have an questions on numbers for a certain class, let me now.

The black looks shiney on all newly delivered RG diesels, but it quickly became oxidized and dirty. You should paint diesels with a gloss or semigloss paint because decals blend in better when you do. Then you dulcote over after the decals to flatten the finish. Then weather.

the locos i plan to do first are C44-9W's and AC4400's. it seems they would be the next step after their SD50's what number blocks do you think they would have used for these locos? what numbers are still available?

my D&RGW SD90MAC is number 8001 i think i will go with the 8000 series for the other SD90's i plan to do, unless these numbers have already been used.

as for the other locos, i think i will give the Rio Grande some SD75's (seems they are being dumped by walthers, they are the cheapest right now)

There is a E-Bay seller that does fantasy paint jobs on various new units. His web site is www.geocities.com/trainartid=blue>

Check out his engine gallery and look for the D&RGW SD90MAC. That is one sharp looking engine as are several of his other "what if" schemes.

hehe....that Rio Grande SD90MAC is the one he built for me. I also bought a D&H SD90MAC from him, although i dont know why.

Lance makes some excellent locomotives. the detail rivals brass and the paint jobs are excellent. He hasnt been doing many locos lately, mostly just structures that he sells on eBay.

here is a shot of the 2 SD90's

He does some fine custom jobs from the looks of it.

Seeing that unit in Rio Grande sure makes me wish for what we aren't going to have.

Don't you wish the Grande was still around? Staying or visiting in Glenwood Springs ain't the same with those darn yellow diesels running thru!
