GP38 v GP38-2 v GP39-2

    GP38 v GP38-2 v GP39-2

    Are there any noticeable differences between these??? I've got a GP38 in Santa Fe colors in my inventory, but it's the wrong paint scheme, so I'm thinking about painting it in the right paint scheme, but I'm wondering if I could make it a bit more unique by converting it at the same time to a GP38-2 or GP39-2.id='Georgia'>

    Between the 38 and the 38-2 you have the usuall Dash 2 changes, which I cannot recall off the top of my head.

    However the GP39 was a different animal. It has a 12 cylinder turbocharged 645 vs the 16 cylinder normally asperated 645 used in the GP38 line. What does this mean on a model? There will be only 6 engine access doors per side as opposed to eight, and instead of two exhaust stacks there is one large "turbo" stack.

    These are the main differences.

        One thing I did, which resulted in a 'respectable' GP39-2 was to graft an Athearn GP40-2 dynamic brake hatch to an Athearn GP38-2. It sort resembles one of the early GP39-2s except for having too many tall doors. However, I have found that the guys at the club only notice the turbo stack and two fans, then ask 'what's dat?' They don't notice the extra tall doors.

          I have thought of the same approach. Maybe say they used old GP38s in the conversion.

          When I think of it, I do not notice doors on models or the prototype on most occations.

            Do they notice the fan spacing, or did you use a Plano fan hatch?

              Nope, no one has yet to say anything about fan spacing. One of these days, when I feel ambitious, I would like to kitbash another one, but moving the turbo bulge back as on the later models. That puppy makes a pretty distinctive model.

                Don,You just give me a idea.I back dated some Athearn GP38-2 to 38s long before the current 38 by Atlas.All I did was fill in the sight glass and most did not notice the difference in the 38 and 38-2( some thought it was a early Atlas 38).I am now thinking on the lines of doing 2 GP39s like you did.Thanks for the tip!

                BTW Most of the guys at the club hasn't caught on to my Chessie SD50s are really SD60s! Of couse our very own rivet counter did and almost had a heart attack over it,the poor guy!
