They bought the SD70M's to replace the old SD40 types and get the AC types hauling coal. Here in Utah, I have never seen a SD70M on a coal train. UP still has new AC types being delivered.

Good catch Jim, I was about to point that out myself. It appears that AC loco's are not turning out to be the panacea that it firt looked like. OTOH, a loco can run all day at speedst that would melt a DC traction motor, but they must be too mantenence intensive to justify running them on a broad basis. Thus the 1000 loco order for the SD70s from UP - which is a step back to good old conventional diesel electric technology.

Jim, That has been my understanding of the situation also, hence the slow speed without melting the traction motors on coal trains. At least my understanding has been that coal isn't as time sensitive, so the RRs don't mind if a coal train has to climb some grades at 10 mph or less, which might melt a DC traction motor if they were in to slow too long.

I did get the impression in the RR press magazines for a while that AC might catch on to a wider extent and the the 1000 unit purchase by UP represented a shift back in thinking. At least I seemed to read that in the articles. I realize they are replacing older DC units like SD40-2s and GE units.

On to other goodies with the SD70M's. NS has ordered 50 SD70M's. Also the latest UP models, 51XX's will have a new style cab.

Jim, I just heard about that Norfolk Southern order and it was surprising to hear, with NS's committment to GEs lately. I did a bit of research, and EMD does have a sizeable stake in the European market. So, I reckon they 'aint dead yet', it's just that today's lokie market is pretty well converted over to 'new' stuff.
