Yep, the GP10 was a product of the ICs Paducah Shops. GP7s were converted to GP8s, and GP9s were converted to GP10s. They even produced a critter called the GP11. Kalmbach's Diesel Spotters guide has some good info on these animals. It seems as though there was a time when the IC bought up every Geep 7 and 9 available and ran 'em through their rebuild process.

Tom,Indeed EMD did make low nose GP9s,these units was built for Phelps-Dodge mining (17 units). These was the very frist low nose locomotives built by EMD..The reason Phelps-Dodge wanted low noses on their GP9s was the engineer could look back over his train durning loading operations... Also,Southern Pacific GP9 #3726 was built with a low nose. This was a late model GP9.The low noses started showing up on GP9s,long before any of the rebuild programs. The high short hood would remain a option for quite some time to come..
You can also visually spot the difference between an early EMD factory low nose (GP9, GP18 & GP20) and an rebuilder's low nose by the slope on the nose.
EMD's factory nose had a definite slope from back to front, whereas non-factory low noses where flat (no slope) from back to front.
Thanks for remindin' us of that Dan. One thing I always thought particularly intriguing about the Paducah rebuilds is the 'frog eye' headlight mounted in the low nose of many of the GP8s. It would be kinda neat if some manufacturer would offer a generic rebuild for us to 'go after' and customize.

I don't know if you were aware of it, but P2K has a nice GP18 on the market and you still might be able to acquire an original release from them which are much less expensive than the newer release will be. About 12 years ago, I kitbashed an NP GP18 out of an AHM shell and Athearn works. Lot's of work it was, but enjoyable results. Were the BM 18s low noses??

HI DON! It's been a LONG time since we 'talked' together!
Yes, the B&M GP-18 was low nose and if the bulge at top center of long hood on r.h. side means it had dynamic brakes; it had. I obtained all this info from FALLEN FLAGS RAILROAD PHOTOS. For anyone looking for their e-mail address, check on my post in OFF-TOPIC, page 6.
