The sheet metal looking roof is in fact tinfoil, I ran a large comb down it.

The tree (logs) started out life as 1/2" balsa rasped/cut to shape/painted, then cut in half and inserted into the log pond.

A BEAUTIFUL job! If you don't mind my asking, (1) how did you get that sheet metal roof thin enough to lap the upper panels over the lower panels? A great effect not done with styrene. And (2) what plant/tree did you use to make your logs? They would have to be natural material by the looks.

BTW: I have completed some of the older wooden craftsman kits of rolling stock (Empire City, Ambroid, etc.), and have really enjoyed them. They have taught me a LOT of skills one would need to attempt scratchbuilding from wood. They're hard to find in hobby stores, but you can get them fairly inexpensively on e-bay (~$15).

If you're a journeyman modeler (like me!) this is a great way to start easing out of the plastic kits and start down the road towards making something like Paul's work of art.

My whole 14' by 11' railroad room is full of a logging empire. It was featured in Model Railroading magazine Aug/Sept 2000 and again in November 2001 under "Badger Creek Lumber Company" my website has many photo's of it.
