    Kitbasher's Diary - HOn30 12' Hoppers

    I got a half-dozen or so of these broken-down little N scale ore cars at a swap meet last year…



    I’ve finally gotten around to doing something with them…I’m converting them to 12’ HOn30 hoppers…

    I’ve started by trimming, & filing off a bunch of the N scale detail, & making new bracing from styrene…



    I'll keep ya posted on how this one goes!

    Drew, you're a far braver fellow than I. I don't recall if I told you this before, but I once dabbled (and that is the appropriate word!) in HOn30 many years ago, when Frary and Hayden were making it popular. I about drove myself :crazy: [:-hypnotized] :crazy: just trying to build a couple of cars. I'd tell you good luck, but I know you well enough to know that you will pull this one off as successfully as all the rest of your kitbash and scratchbash projects. :up:

        I'm anxious to see how this goes Drew. I recently had a discussion with someone about using metal foil inside a frame for hoppers so it can be dinged and bulged outwards realistically. I've tried the old soldering iron on the sides of plastic one's and it just isn't right.

            That was a very short “drive” for me, & it was one I made a long time ago!

            But yeah, I know what you mean…HOn30 has been an interesting, & at times maddening little trip for me, & don’t worry, I’ll eventually get back to the standard gauge thing, & hopfully be the better modeler for having taken this little fork in the road! [:-graduate] :up:

            Well, here’s the first one…





            I still don’t know exactly what I’m going to do with these …but what the heck…

              Talk about a "sow's ear into a silk purse" looks pretty darned good Drew. I'm going to have to borrow this idea when I ever get around to my little HOn30 section for the Lenora Mt. Sicker mine area!

              Tried to scratch-build a couple a few years ago, [:-irked] wasn't satisfied at all with the results (fingers are way too big [:-headache]) but with the base there...I may get it done yet!! [:-jump2]

                [:-bigeyes2] :up: Wow! Now thats cool! Ore ,ballast or coal that makes a nifty piece of equipment for any freelance NG layout.

                    Very nice cars ... I am sure the local clay works (Just like the M&NF) could make use of those cars.
