    Ken, I finally had a chance to catch up since last time and WOW! beautiful job. Where do I start except to say that the whole build has turned out spectacular! Great job on the entire building. Thanks for keeping us up to date with all the progress reports!

      Ken: I've been following along for the nearly year that this little side project has taken and it is coming out fabulous. Everytime I visit I think "Gee, I should try this scale!" Great stuff! Thanks.

        I also have been following along and really like how this has turned out.

        I was also studying the picture below and couldn't help but read the ad about all you can eat Smelt and as someone who could eat fish 7 days a week wonder if they are any good.

        Sorry to to sidetrack the thread with this question.

          Ken: Somehow I missed this thread before. Just wanted to say how really great the welding shop is. Also, I went to your window tutorial and can't wait to give it a try. Those are the most detailed windows I have seen. Overall GREAT work.

            John, smelting takes me back to my youth. Many great memories of cleanng buckets of those fish until the wee hours of the morning

            Covered in flour and deep fried...they were mighty tasty. Unfortunatly, the spring runs are a thing of the past.

            Tim, would you like that chimney in metal or brick?

              What a beautiful building Ken. The color on the walls is very nice. And the front, detailed but not overdetailed, is classy!

                Ken,

                What to make the chimney out of.....hmmm. My guess would be brick, but a metal flue would work. However with the amount of heat that is generated the chimney would have ot be made to withstand that.

                BRICK is my answer.

                Now about the smelt and hog fry, you are going to have both, I hope. Boy does that bring back great memories. I haven't been to a smelt fry in years and just to think they were as common as having a hamburger. I don't know much about smelt other than cooking and eating them...yum

                  Nice job there, jumping to another scale. As for the chimney, I found a similar examples in the Library of Congress database -- with small or no chimneys. (But what fun is that?)

                    I just stumbled onto this thread and just love the brick work! Fortunately I model in on30 and think it's feasible to try this in O scale.. I never thought about using chalk as grout. That is so amazing!

                      Geez, seven months go buy and I forgot to update this thread. Got a lot of catching up to do. I'll do it over a couple of days or so.

                      I really struggled with how I wanted to place the structure on the base. I decided to face it the long way to get the most room out of the fenced in yard. I was going to have a road at the bottom, but it made the yard too small so I scraped that idea. Besides, a rural road isn't that interesting



                      So I decided on a ditch with a culvert under a gravel driveway. I cut out the location of the culvert and painted the base.



                      Plastic tube was used for the culvert, then I added some plaster stones and then laid and glued the gravel drive.



                      Next came the detail to the culvert.

                            Just found this topic. I'm upto page 2. Bloody great brickwork finish & colouring. You should have made RTV moulds and sold the walls.

                            I'ii continue on with the next few pages..

                              Just read all the thread. Nice work all round.

                              How did you blend the brickwork in the corners... Did I miss something.

                                Hi Mario,

                                The corners were cut on a 45, glued together, plaster added to any voids and then cleaned up.


                                Next thing was the fence. Much easier than HO for sure. I first made a jig similar to the one I made for my HO fences but just a tad larger



                                Then I lightly weathered the boards and gave them a soak in A&I.



                                The assembled fence.



                                After looking at it for awhile Tim thought it needed some signage. He didn't want to pay someone so Trussman made his own with left over fence boards. Such a handy guy



                                And along this side will reside a scratched together Red Bird Taxi (hopefully) so I added some advertising there also.
