Ok, so I've decided on another project and it will be a multi year build. After finishing JD's Machine Shop I figured that I needed to do something to incorporate JD's into, instead of just putting it on a shelf to collect dust.
This project is a 80 x 16 inch shelf layout which will give me plenty of room for the Shop plus other future projects as well as room for scenery. The object is to do the best work possible and not worry about how long it will take; hence the multi year approach.
Going "old school" on this build using Ho scale track which has been ordered and should be here by April 20th. I have a box with a bunch of rolling stock and some engines. The chassis will be used with O scale tops. Everything will be scratch built including a couple of Critters for motive power. This approach will give me that "narrow gauge" feel as well as being purely fictional so whatever I like goes.
The layout will have 3 turnouts with a simple track plan. As much as I would like to post the track plan I can't since it comes from MR. After I get the track figured out then I can post a photo of the layout track. It will run on DC, none of that DCC stuff, and the turnouts will be thrown using switch-stands. Also there will be 3 blocks to the track so 2 Critters can be on the layout at once.
So here is "Caz Coal & Wood":

The name is from a nearby village just north from where I live. Went with coal & wood, and not lumber, so a sawmill wasn't needed and also that was the fuel used years ago to heat homes in the winter months. The frame was made with 1x4's with a foam top which is green, yipee no pink. From the back edge of the frame to the front edge is 16 inches; so I will run the scenery right up onto the front edge. The legs are scrap lumber and the layout is level going both ways. The frame sits on top of a chair rail with metal clips made that attached to the back of the frame and goes in between the wall and chair rail. That way If I ever need to take it down it's just a matter of lifting it off the chair rail. With the legs added it is very solid and strong. The foam panels were glued into place and a few blocks added underneath for a little extra support.
It's not much to look at for the moment but it's a good foundation for the CC&W Railroad. Even though it's flat there is plenty of foam left over which I intend to use to do some scenic elevations to break up the flat look.

Of course I had to redo the bench before starting a new project. With the layout over the bench I have plenty of room to work; just need to get some better lighting.
Other than figuring out the track plan with some old track, I really can't do too much until the new track, turnouts, and rail joiners arrive.
Any comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated.
