Removing Tender Shell From Ath/Gen OT 2-8-0

    I'm glad you found success. I wish all body shells were held on with screws (although not hidden by the trucks.) I don't like the idea of bending and prying.

    I once witnessed a now fairly prominent modeler pick up a loco only to have the bottom drop out because somebody had not snapped it on fully. Embarrassing for all. And hard on the locomotive.

      Hi Mike!

      Yes, many models are now a Rubik's Cube when it comes time to disassemble. (You should see some of the Atlas HO diesels from China!) In diesels, I like those that the body is secured by the coupler box. Easy-peasy.

      The MDC slide-fit tenders have never been an issue for me. The tender frame is firmly gripped by the shell, yet reasonably easy to remove with gentle, but firm, pressure. However, I've never had one yet that I've painted, lettered, pinstriped, etc. THAT might make it more disconcerting to have to grip it with the needed pressure to remove it. I may find that I'm not comfortable having to do so.

        OK, not sure who you bought it from, but it may have had a tender change. Also looks like someone drilled those holes for a sound decoder. Than removed the decoder before selling it off. You may have been screwed on this sale. Or, the person thought it had a sound decoder in it, not being into trains themselves.

        These are the instructions from my 2-8-2 if you have the same locomotive.

          Me thinks you misread my original post. I don't have a Mikado 2-8-2. I stated in my original post that it's an "Ath/Gen Old Time DCC/Sound 2-8-0".

          However, the information you shared is exactly correct for the 2-8-2.

              So Andre, now that you have it apart, was there a decoder in there?

              I turned mine over and the holes look the same as on your tender.

                I didn't proceed with removing the shell. It has become apparent to me that this B&O 2-8-0 (that is the focus of this thread) is NOT DCC/Sound equipped.

                However, I DO need to know how to remove these Ath/Gen tender shells on account of this B&O 2-8-0 that will need a DCC/Sound decoder installed as well as the Ath/Gen SP 2-8-0 I have that has a non-sound decoder I will eventually be replacing.

                It's all good.

                    Hi Louis!

                    Yes, the pictured locomotive/tender in the link you provided is the type of locomotive and tender I have. I have three of those types. One is a "Green Box" MDC/Roundhouse, the other two are Athearn/Genesis. The misrepresented one in this thread is an Athearn/Genesis DC version.

                    The "Green Box" MDC/Roundhouse SP Daylight 2-8-0 I've purchased has a non-sound decoder in it that looks like a Soundtraxx (going by the shrink wrap color). Perhaps it's a sound decoder but lacks a speaker? I'll investigate more fully "one of these days".

                      UPDATE:

                      I received a response from the seller. He was very sorry for his mistake (he's apparently not a model railroader) and said he would refund in full. I believe him. The little engine does run nice, and I did get it for an extremely good price IF it had been DCC/Sound as thought. I offered to call it good with a small refund of $20, which puts the engine in the price range of a non-DCC/Sound version of the same engine.

                      He agreed.

                      SO, I'll keep the little B&O at a price point that I'm fine with, and he's relieved he dosen't have to start the return/refund ordeal that eBay imposes.

                      Win-win.

                        I remember that the early sound-equipped Athearn 2-8-0 locomotives were criticized over the poor sound. You might be better off having to install sound.

                          Hi Mike!

                          Could be! The one I bought new was from the last run. It has a Tsunami Econami decoder in it. Sounds great, but lacks some of the features of the full blown Tsunami 2 that I want to have.

                          However, it turned out fine. I'm pleased.

                            The Roundhouse engines that had a sound decoder in them were horrible in my opinion. The Roundhouse 4-4-0 comes with a decoder, and the first thing I do with them is turn the engine over and pull the sound decoder and install a plain old fleet decoder until I can install a quality sound decoder.

                            Maybe the newer ones are better, but the ones I bought were terrible. They ran horribly and the sound was very loud, even at minimum settings.

                              The last run of 2-8-0's (released late last year) used Soundtraxx Econami decoders (with full Econami features), and they must have used better speakers, because the one I purchased new last year sounds really good and has good functions. I will "eventually" replace it with a decoder that has even more features (TSU2? TCS? Loksound?), but for now my latest production example is fine and dandy.

                              As for running: No real complaints on any of the RTR 2-8-0's I have purchased of late. I do note that on the 5.2% test grade, when drifting in reverse downgrade there can be some noticeable gear lash lurch. (A common malady among model locomotives unfortunately.) However, upgrade, level track, or typical gradient down grades: Superb.
