  • Removing Tender Shell From Ath/Gen OT 2-8-0

SO, my "bargain" Ath/Gen Old Time DCC/Sound 2-8-0 I was crowing about has turned out to be a dud.

Indications are it has a dead short. :erm:

I am "assuming" the tender shell is a sliding fit onto the frame as is the case with ALL MDC's I've had in the past, I've applied considerable pressure trying to pull the tender shell off.

    Tender no budge.

IS there a trick I need to know to get the tender off on these Ath/Gen 2-8-0's?

Thanks a TON for any input you can share.

Andre, First check the tender wheels. Are they in syndic, picking up on the right rail?

Sorry, but if it had a short the decoder is most probably fried.

And, mine has screws in the coener holding the shell on.

So the dead short is solved: It is NOT equipped with DCC/Sound as was advertised. (Which explains the flashing lights, the slight buzzing from the engine, and the flashing power indicator light on the DCC control center.)

When placed on track powered by DC ONLY... runs fine and dandy.

I have yet to decide how to proceed with the "mistaken" (I'm giving the seller the benefit of the doubt there) identification.

        Thanks Bob.

Just saw your post after posting the above. I will look for screws in the corners of the tender, because I'll eventually need to be able to take the tender shells off these things in the future, anyway.

It could because I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other, but I'm not seeing any screws on the tender frame?

Andre, why is there a speaker in the tender with holes that look like someone used

a soldering iron to vent the sound? If that was an eBay deal, file a complaint. It

seems like it takes forever, but 'filing' is the starting point.

            Good luck!

              Jim:

              Hi Jim!

              Thanks for your input.

When viewing it with the magnification, it doesn't appear to be a speaker. Comparing it to my Ath/Gen I purchased new that IS equipped with DCC/Sound verifies that it's not a speaker. Just guessing, but it might be the lighting circuit for the LED's.

I've already contacted the seller to inform him of his "mistake". I shall wait to see what his proposal will be. I would like to keep the engine, for it runs nicely now that I've figured out it isn't DCC. A partial refund would be ideal. Frankly, I purchased this at a price that isn't too much above what is proving to be a typical going price for non-DCC examples of same. So I've not been burnt too bad. However, it would have been nice for it to have indeed been DCC/Sound.

For this locomotive tender you have to insert two screwdrivers into the sides of the tender shell, (where I put the two yellow circles) and pry apart while lifting the shell off of the frame.

The inside of the shell has four dimples on each side of the tender shell that hold onto the frame. I marked these spots in red circles.

                  THANK YOU Louis!!

I've saved that diagram to my "C&P Engine Ideas" folder.

I suspected it was something like that, but I didn't want to pry n' gouge without knowing where/why.

Well that sucks. I'm glad Louis was able to help you. I think you need to talk to the seller and Ebay. At least get a down payment for a decoder.

                      Bob:

It sucks that it's not what I thought it was (DCC/Sound equipped), but at least I can now put the decoder of my choice therein without agonizing over pulling out a perfectly good Econami that doesn't quite have all the features I want. (I get to face that on my other Ath/Gen DCC/Sound engine.)

Yes, the illustrations Louis supplied helps a bunch. I wondered why the relief areas on the sides of the tender, and thought perhaps those were pry points... but not knowing for sure I didn't want to start rootin' n' gouging.

As mentioned, I've already contacted the seller. So far: Nothing.

My Roundhouse engines have screws between the frame and the shell hidden under the trucks/inboard axles. Un-screw a truck and you will find it there or take out an axle.

On my engines the Phillips head screw is under the left bottom inboard wheel and the right upper inboard wheel.

Not sure that's a drawing of the same tender, the one Andre has has a vent in the bottom for a speaker and circuit board inside. The one in the diagram has a solid bottom with a weight in it.

Before I buggered up the shell trying to pry it off, I'd pull an axle or unscrew a truck.

My memory of having installed a decoder in my Athearn 2-8-0 several years ago is that you have to remove the trucks as Dave says. No prying.

                            Thanks for your input.

It sure won't hurt to double check to make sure there isn't a "Gotcha!" hidden.

                              Good thing I checked!!

                              Sure 'nuf... there's two GOTCHA's!...

                              Bob:

You were right about there being screws! Only the screws weren't in the corners, instead they were very effectively hidden by the truck bolsters!

Thanks again to all that offered some input.
