  • What happens to a Bathtub coal car that sits- rust

    Hi all,

So looking thru a box here one day I found I had an HO scale plastic Intermountain Railway Co.

Bathtub coal car and couldn't find too many pics online of one so I thought what happens to all the coal cars since coal isn't used like it once was?

The following pics are what I came up with. Note: I raised in a false bottom to add enough wait to meet the NMRA standards.

I hear some of these cars made it to scrap yard duty, so maybe the next one I do will be beat up a bit?[B)]

This car is weathered using artist oils, dull coat, alcohol and real coal dust for effect. This car is stock detailed (didn't know how to run the piping since I couldn't find pictures of it). I hope this give someone an idea for weathering their car.

    Thanx Thom...

Ooops, I'm an idiot. At the top-change wait to weight. :erm: Don't know how I missed that?

I've only seen bathtub type coal hoppers from ground level. I hadn't realized that the deck inside over the trucks would be so comspicuous.

        JBVB,

I never saw the inside of one either (I can't find many pics of bathtub coal gons at all) let a lone the inside, but the model inside is white with the ends as you see here.

The only thing I did was mimic a new floor on both ends and raise them 1/8" up to hide the square weights I added.

I can only guess the manufacturer has got them right?

Perhaps someone on the forum has the right shots?

        Thanx Thom...

Need to shout out to the Culligan Man!! that must be terribly hard water for a bath...

I’d imagine that the 1:1 version of that car would not have the block shapes over the trucks the model has, but be built out to mirror the / shape of the side profile and trucks would mount to bolsters at the same plane as the center beam. The model may be intended to be displayed loaded.

I managed to find a drawing of a bath gon and it shows two end shelf platforms inside. Interesting.

                  Hi everyone,

Sometimes when I build, I get this feeling that I can either do better or it's...just not done yet.

So I thought I'd add a removable steel scrap load because I saw a picture of this type of car in a scrap yard while researching.

The load is made up of actual steel shavings I did some 20 years ago and added a little salt to a jug of water and sat it on a shelf until I checked it out of curiosity some 7 years ago, but was still damp. (no shhhht).[:-bigeyes2]

So I removed the cap and left it until a couple days ago. No-I wasn't in a hurry to use the rust pieces-in fact I just didn't have a reason to use them until now. Go figure. :erm:

Here is what I came up with. The load is 1/8" thick white glued onto a thin piece of black styrene sheet with a 3/4" thick soft foam piece to give the illusion the car is full.(I wanted to try and keep the load light as possible).
