I have a couple of brass HOn3 locos that now run smoothly. However, they required some work by a friend who loves doing that. One was re-motored. The diesel HOn3 brass that I have are noisy, but run pretty good.
I have a number of brass engines both steam and diesel. All the steamers run pretty good. The more expensive the brass steam engine the better they run. You can always put in the newer motors of today.
The diesels are another story. The ones I have don't run to bad. They are noisy due to their drives. Gears will be noisy, especially metal spur gears.
Since you are looking at HOn3 I do have a couple of steam engines. They run pretty good. I don't have any experience with the newer models on the market.
