I put together the two hatches in the bow of the scow. I built them like they were built in full scale. The are a series of timbers butted perpendicularly to each other to from a box, and then the next layer is turned 90 degrees, and then the next layer. There are three to four layers.
I created a jig from delrin (slippery so glue won't stick) to create the box shape. The yellow
Post-it note paper helps keep the parts in place.
