    "Choices Challenge" Rock Deck Scow

    This project is one that I started a year ago and put on the back burner.

    I am building this for my current layout build.

    this will be a rock deck scow based on an actual scow that was built for the New Haven Trap Rock Co. by a Connecticut ship builder.

    I am using maple for the hull, poplar for the cabin and NESL lumber for bullwarks, bitts, and other deck details.

    The cabin will be printed paper over wood with layered detail.

    I made a sanding jig with the correct deck camber and created a deck board scribe tool out of a plastic block and a compass extension arm.

    Ahh! to be young again! Wish I could still build in that level of detail. I'm enjoying this and the scratch built Tank car as well.

        Jim,

        My eye sight is not what it used to be and my hands shake like the dickens. I just got a head band magnifier for Christmas and if I concentrate enough I can calm the shakes.

              Neat! That prototype has a lot of character.

              Were these scows self-powered or did they have to be towed?

                The scows were towed in groups by a tug. It might be pretty cool to see one built in your scale!

                    Lost some headway, but I'm sailing again.

                    I started cutting out the rub rails, rock bulwarks, and mooring bitts.

                    I finished scribing the deck planks and still need to cut the toe rails.

                    Some of the scale lumber I am cutting and sanding, and some I will bend and glue.

                            Well I got distracted, add in some procrastination, and a some poor communication skills, and this is what you get, delayed updates.

                            So I was nervous about building this. Finally got some time and nerve and glued up the bulkheads.

                            I was not sure how I was goning to hold the boards in place will glueing the stanchions on.

                            I ended up putting down some double sided upholstery tape, then some strips of post-it note (sticky side up), then the boards on top.

                            The post-it was sticky enough to hold the boards in place, but not pull off fibers.

                            For the other side, I layed them top to top to line up the stanchions.

                            Next up, deck hatches.

                              It looks like you double sided tape/post-it note solution worked fine, Scott! They look very good.
