    "Choices Challenge" Z Scale Tank Car

    I will be scratch building a tank car used by the Union Tank Line. The car was produced in the years 1885-1890 by the Harrisburg Car Works.

    This car is on the list of cars run on the CNE and what I want to create for a future CNE layout.

    I will be using mostly brass. The ends will be turned down binding nuts. The chassis will either be brass or wood. The trucks will be off the shelf.

    I made a drill jig out of plastic block to locate the dome.

    Here is what I have so far.

    Looks like it will be an excellent build Scott.

    In Z scale that's very fine work. I have enough trouble in N.

      Nice start, Scott.

      If I didn't see the pictures, I'd say scratch building in Z scale was impossible.

        Scott, next picture can you put a dime in the photo so we can all appreciate the small size and your building challenges?

              Very cool! It will be interesting to see something built at the far end of the scale from mine (1/24th).

                  I've always wanted a large outdoor layout. I envy the amount of detail you can add without a microscope!

                    Set aside some time this week for the tank car and turned down the end caps for the tank, cut 5/32 tube

                    for the "turret", and turned the cap for the "turret.

                    I'm using the plain half of the binding nut to create the end caps. The binding nuts have a curved head

                    that is close in scale to the actual curved end caps on the prototype.

                    I turned down a round head slotted brass screw to match the "turret" diameter and reduced the head height to .02".

                    If you notice, I have scribed in tank sections. I think they are a bit light, so I'll have to go in and deepen them.

                    Next step is to solder everything.

                    I am still debating on a brass or wood chassis with as much detail as I can get.
