    The 2021 Choices Challenge Main Thread

    This thread is where participants can discuss which of the choices he/she is choosing, comment on other members' posts, post progress photos along the way, or even document the entire build.

    We hope that we get great participation in this year's Challenge. We all have many options from which to choose!

    I will end up doing a few project for this year's Challenge. First up is a simple barn once offered by Mountaineer Precision Products.

          I will finish my scratchbuilt roundhouse and turntable, and repaint refresh a locomotive.

            Happy new year all.

            Good to see this started, and some nice builds coming up. Should be a good variety of topics.

            I'm doing No. 6 on the challenge list.

            I'm going to scratchbuild a version of the Atchafalaya boathouse, built by Geoff Nott, that resides on the well known Muskrat Ramble layout.

            With some small changes, mine will have a New England flavour to it.

              There are some fantastic structures on the Maskrat Ramble, and the boathouse is certainly one of them. Are you planning on building the wharf as well, Rob?

                Howdy Mark. Yep that is still one of the best display layouts ever made. Blew everyone away when it was revealed at the Aust NG convention in 2009. Along with the Dolly Varden, also now on display in Florida.

                Yep I will be doing the wharf as well. The structure will get done in the 4 month timeframe of the Challenge. But I have also started a separate thread, in the scratchbuilt forum, in case I cant finish the whole diorama in time.

                  Here are the windows I'll be using. As best as I can tell, they match the original.

                  All doors will be scratchbuilt from balsa.



                  I got some measurements of the original, off Frank Palmer many years ago. But I'm reducing the footprint slightly.

                  Basswood weatherboards by NE Lumber.

                  Will be mounted on matboard sub walls.

                  The back is different to the original, so of my own design.

                    My challenge entry is going to fall under #6, Create a sketch of a structure and then scratch build it. 1 Point for simple, 2 Points for complex. I'm not sure how complex it'll be since it's a small icing platform that can only handle one car at time. Before I start my design work, I had to work out the building's footprint. This looks like it will fit. That's 70' long and 35' deep.

                          I found this box mixed in with a bunch of structure kits. It's an old Red Ball/Wabash Valley kit. You'd buy printed car sides separately from the rest of the kit.



                          Inside are -5- printed car sides (4x36' and one 40' set), parts for 3 36' cars, and almost no instructions!



                          But that's why it's a -challenge-, right?

                          I can use the cast sides to get reasonable facsimiles of the 2 PRR cars. I'm not sure about the B&O car, I need more info on those. I'll cut different subwalls/ends for construction from some 1/4" lumber in the shop. Matching the paint will be interesting, the 2 PRR sides are definitely different shades of boxcar red. These will get minimal undercarriages, like I did for my set of 28' last year.

                            There are some great projects here. I like the vintage kits being pulled out and am looking forward to seeing what today's techniques can do to them.

                              Dave, those vintage kits look interesting. Exactly matching the colours may be a bit hard, but with some weathering should look good.
