  • The Gallery: Jan. 2021 "Stations -and- Freight Houses"

We will start the new year off by dedicating this Gallery to those classic railroad structures: stations and freight houses.

Either model or prototype pictures are welcome.

I'll start off the month with this station. The town of Fonda, NY was served by the Fonda, Johnstown & Gloversville Railroad up through the 1970's. The closure of their main customer - a tannery spelled the end of the railroad. https://www.american-rails.com/fjg.html

Here's a prototype station located approximately four miles to the east of me. It's located in Ionia, NY on what was the called "The peanut Line", I believe it was a subsidiary of the NYC. The line was torn up in the late 30's. The station still stands today as a private residence. The line ran from Canandaigua, NY to Niagara Falls, NY. It ran right past my parents house in West Bloomfield, NY. I've also included several picture of the Canandaigua, NY. I had a fire, luckily a majority of the station was block walls. It was rebuilt as a restaurant.

First five pictures are of the Ionia station.

The next four of the Canandaguia station. The first is the early 1900's, the second looks like about the 30's or 40's judging by the cars front end, several days after it burned and the rebuild as it looks today.

I believe this last picture is of the station from the backside due to the open area for parking since the tracks of the Finger Lakes railroad is still on the front side.

WOW, 52 years ago. I had one more year to go to graduation. I remember seeing the burned out building. And then later when it was rebuilt. Forgot how long ago that was. Thanks for link.
