  • Can anyone tell me what this is?

This is on the roof of a small diesel.

I'm thinking of adding it to my model, but I don't have a clue what it is. I looks cool though to me anyway.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a view from the top down? It could be a heater or ac unit or external radiator or..............

Hard to decipher from such a pixelated view. Do you have a less pixelated view? I sort of agree with Tyson on it being a radiator perhaps or some kind of cooling device. Perhaps an oil cooler if the engine has a hydraulic type drive.

Dave I'd go with some sort of radiator thingy like this AGEIR boxcab. Junk always looks good.

            Jerry.

Frank and all thanks for stepping in with your thoughts.

I considered a radiator type thingy but I didn’t see any cooling fins or a fan. I’ve googled the information on the full size image hoping to find other views but no luck. I haven’t even seen anything like this on other locos of this nature. Box cabs yes.

Guess I’ll just have to have Guido my master hacker cobble up something that would look the part. [:-cowboy]

I think we ought to check with Russ, it looks like a "Polish Moon Roof" to me.

From what I can see, it's a 15-25 ton 4-axle switcher, not built by GE. So the radiator is on the end of the hood. As Mike and Bernd have said, the box on the roof could be aftermarket equipment. If it isn't air conditioning, it might be a remote control setup. If we could see the whole locomotive, we could ID it and compare the photo with others of the same make/model.

I’ll be home from work shortly and post the whole photo.

Just didn’t want to offend with improper posting of a photo I nabbed off the net.

It is copyrighted but here is a link to it.

I didn't put 2 and 2 together and realize this on is a Roaring Camp & Big trees locomotive. That did help me to find a better view though.

Heres the link to the photo.

                    I spoke too soon.

Found another view but not a lot more help

                    Gee it's chunky!

Looks longer in the other photo.

                    Love it though.

If I try to do one from the ground up its going to be ising that as the prototype

Could be. There's a mechanical attachment on the front and I'm thinking that it could be the control to open and close a louvered thingie.

                        I can do that!

Worked a on a drawing this morning before work where the top would be a screen with a fan underneath. I have a fan on an etching and it also includes a Louvered cover. BOOM!

I love this type of sleuthing!

It's now at the Kauai Plantation Railway in Hawaii!

It does look like there's a blower duct attached to the front of the box. It used to be at Bethlehem Steel in L.A., so maybe a/c or a filter?

That shot of the engine that MarcusF has provided, conjures up an idea to make this "A Challenge project" for the upcoming 2021. How about it, Bruce?
