  • Thank you Scott, I appreciate it. The decals are the art work of Joel Brumm.

    This morning I finished rebuilding most of my yard. After lunch and I rest my back I'll clean the track and see how the engine take the new track work. I'm sure they'll do fine as even the Mikey cars like it.

    • The engines took to the new turnouts quite well. Like ducks to water. The Bachmann American, the Athearn Consolidation and even the work diesel pushing the track cleaning car. I thought sure the pad would get hung up on the stub points but no, it works fine. and now I have a fully operating layout. Maybe I'll be brave enough to let the mogul do loops. Maybe.

      • Bob,

        Congrats! I can't wait to get to that point!

        • Thank you Scott.

          The ruling grade on my mainline is just under 4%. I have some spots just over 4%. I just got a digital level and I'm in the process of lowering all grades to below 4%. At some point I will raise the staging yard as it's a 5.25% to get out of that hole. But even with these spots of step grades on the mainline my Bachmann Americans are handling six flatcars and an overton combine. My Athearn Consolidations have no problem with this same train. My shortest passing track is only able to accommodate seven cars with a caboose and engine so I'm confident that they will handle any of my freight trains.

          • Bob,

            I've been rather hoping to see you get back to the layout. It must be encouraging and motivational to have new locomotives to run. And you've been building new structures to add as well.

            Mike

            • Mike, As the Mogul project winds down I'll now be able to focus on the layout. Especially since the moguls are pulling better than expected. Their strength means I can drop other engine projects down the priority list. Scenery development should be the chief benefactor of this reassessment of priorities. That's a good thing because I really enjoy Scenery work.

              • I have been enjoying the running of trains on my layout. I've started using Mineral spirits to clean my tracks. With Alcohol the track would stay clean just a couple of hours but the MS has lasted a couple of weeks already. Anyway I was working on a old 40' Athearn Boxcar for a friend and I thought you would enjoy a shot of size difference between this 50's boxcars and my early rail equipment;

                • Yes, I saw "way back when" that the size difference is startling! And that little boxcar is HO standard gauge! That was one of the features that compelled me toward the era: You get more capacity (as well as action) for any given layout size.

                  I've read that link 'n pin era modeling is like modeling later era 3' narrow gauge in regards to the size of the equipment.

                  • I've had people think my layout is narrow gauge simply because the rolling stock is so small. In fact narrow gauge equipment is really small. Cars average about a foot narrower, for instance.

                    I like your comparison, Bob. Very striking.

                              How was that? I really wanted to go, but I had to work. I saw some pics from one of my coworkers who made it out and it looked like it was a blast.

                              • The fair was just fabulous. Far beyond expectations. Really a dream come true for me. I'll have a full report when i get my Videos short out but just one highlight now. On Wednesday at dusk in Antonito they had seven engines in the yard, 5 were under steam and moving around, four were built in the 19th century. What a sight that was. But, right now I wanted to share my progress on #7 while the Forum was down. She only needs a few more details and a little tuning.

                                Gosh! That is so much easier! You might notice the Engineering is getting painted.
