Hey Karl, I know what you mean. I too hate cleaning an airbrush for just a small project, so I use the spray cans as a fast alternative. Sometimes being a big mistake. :erm:

Rich, thanks, but I've seen your work and you are selling your self short. You do a lot more better that you're giving credit to yourself.

The truck side frames on my Bachmann 44 ton locomotive chassis was silver, so I primed them with good old Wal-Mart spray paint gray primer, and then a coat of flat black spray paint.









Now is a good time to discuss installing a DCC sound, or non-sound decoder into your Climax.

Bachmann locomotives have motor RF suppression capacitors which affect DCC performance. If your Bachmann DCC decoder is factory installed then leave the capacitors, however, should you want to replace the Bachmann decoder with another DCC decoder such as Digitrax or Soundtraxx I recommend you cut out the capacitors. It has been known to have erratic running with the capacitors left in after installing a different manufactured decoder, by removing the capacitors all is fine once again. As to the Bachmann factory installed sound engines there is no reason for you to cut the capacitors, however once again, should you want to replace the Bachmann sound decoder, then you would want to cut the capacitors off. Without a lot of tech talk, simply these capacitors are TV noise suppressors. They are required in Europe so your model trains do not interfere with your neighbor’s TV picture reception. For American DCC these capacitors are not needed.

This below photo shows light board before decoder is installed. The two yellow capacitors marked C1 and C2 must be removed. Remove them by cutting the leads off flush with the board or unsolder them. It is important to cut them as flush as possible to the board to allow room to install a decoder. Also the copper jumper tabs must be removed.



This next photo shows new wiring for DCC operation. Notice the two yellow capacitors that should be cut off, marked C1 and C2. The decoder should be held in place with 1/4" wide Kapton tape, or other means. The leads should be kept long enough to allow for a good installation. The solder pads on the light board should be tinned first, and also the wires should be tinned. Then the wires can be soldered to the light board. In this installation, the wires can be soldered flat onto the pads. The pads are numbered starting with #8 on the left then #’s 1,2,4,5,6,7 (three “#3” is skipped/left off). Solder the wires as follows: 8= red, 1= orange, 2= yellow, 3 is not there, 4= black, 5= gray, 6= white, 7= blue. This wiring is for DCC with, or without sound decoder. Remember to install resistors for your forward and reverse lights. In the Roundhouse Climax you can install up to a 1” speaker, up into the roof, second and third picture shown setting on top of the shell for viewing, and speaker enclosure installed into a Climax shell roof.
