    This morning I cut the two board sides from the boiler section, (shown in red) leaving on the front two boards to cover the body frame pieces at the front of the Climax, to finish off the looks of the locomotive front section once glued back together. The second picture shows the two board lip left on the boiler section, (in yellow) to finish off the front end.

        A new Climax window frame has been cut from black styrene .030, a scale 1.5 feet high, and width of the original window frame, and made-up to fill the opening of the lowered boiler section, along with two (2) side panels to replace the height needed after lowering as well, for each side of the Climax. Next, I cut a piece of .030 black styrene a scale 5-1/2 x 8 foot to make a deck for the fuel bunker to place real logs on, replacing the original plastic cast logs.

          Today I worked on gluing the Climax back together. After making a new window frame, front window side panels and a deck for the fuel bunker, these items were glued into place. Then the lowered boiler section was re-glued back onto the Climax shell, and the Bachmann 44 Ton shell was glued in to the inside bottom of the climax shell. The pictures below show the process of parts glued together. You can just see the top of the cut 44 Ton shell through the boiler front hole. And, the rear of the Climax shell has a space at the bottom that will need to be filled in with an air tank, wood beam, or some sort of concealment. The last picture shows the two shells mated together making a nice clean fit. Now the Climax shell can be mounted onto its new motive power chassis.

                    The next step in the process will be putting on the detail parts that were supplied with the Roundhouse MDC Climax kit, as shown in the drawing below. I will be replacing however, the Jewel that comes as a headlight, and replace it with a working 3mm LED headlight. Once all the locomotive parts are mounted, the Climax shell will be primer painted. The finished color, I’m still tossing around with thoughts for that.

                          Starting with the Climax headlight, so that I can drill the necessary holes for mounting the 3mm LED wires through the boiler top, into the body section, and while the Box front cover is off, so I can get to the wiring easily, I decided to make-up the headlight assembly first. The Climax kit calls for mounting a Jewel for the headlight, but I can’t have that. I’m going to install a 3mm Yeloglo White LED with a 470 Ohm resistor by Miniatronics Corp. #12-310-05. The Blue and White wires I am using are 30 AWG Digitrax wires. Below picture and drawing shows the assembly of parts, and items that will be used for my Climax headlight.

                            Today I worked with the headlight assembly, soldering the wires to the 3mm LED and attaching it inside if the Climax headlight box. The first picture shows two (2) holes drilled on each side of the smokestack/headlight bracket mounting stud. Also, the soldered wires and the LED installed into the headlight box. The second picture shows the completed headlight box with 3mm LED installed, and the headlight box setting up against the smokestack/headlight bracket mounting stud. Third picture shows the wires entering the body just above the boiler through the drilled holes, alongside the smokestack/headlight mounting bracket stud. And, the bottom of the Climax shell showing the wires entering the body, ready for the resistor and decoder connecting.

                            The last two Pictures shows the headlight bracket resting on the mounting stud, now ready for permanently gluing into place.

                              Wonderful job so far.

                              I've built one of these and was disappointed. Mainly disappointed in my own skills. To me, the wood needs to be removed from the sides/front (and possibly cab) and replaced with real wood. My thought is that nothing looks like wood but wood. Unfortunately, I lack the time, talent and skills to do such a thing.

                              Good luck! I'll be watching and hopefully learning!
