Thank you everyone. I had wished that the two engines were different #'s but both modelers wanted the same number.
I finished the two engines last night.
I bent new handrails for both. I knew I had to make new ones for one but the other's handrails, while them came off in one piece, were too warped to re-use. My replacements might be a bit crude, but they are straighter than the originals.
and the family portrait:
From the bottom, P2K Sw1200's in CN and CP, Rapido SW1200rs in CN, P2K Canfor sw1200, and in the rear is my upcoming Athearn HOn3 SW1200rs using a Juneco conversion kit.
Thanks Bernd. The recipients of the models were very happy with them as well.
I won't be going very fast on the next project as I've started to work on my layout again with some new ideas.
Both of the modelers that I built the Canfor engines now want me to build them a second engine. One wants a second yellow unit (these often ran in pairs) but the other wants the second painted in the repaint scheme: 304 EMD SW1200u (CANFOR) Vancouver Island | # 304 EMD SW1200… | Flickr
This was their paint job after being re-engined with caterpillar prime movers. I'm not going into the extra details that the remotering added, just the same dynamic brake and air tanks of the originals. The paint job however will be a challenge. Also, this time I won't have the decals except for the numbers so those won't be added.
I got one of the original engines back so I can copy the details somewhat accurately. I was slightly disappointed to find this:
The owner decided to add these two barrels to the rear and made a mess. I'll clean it up before I return the engine
Ata-boy Glenn! Good quality control and customer service brother. Always make everything that leaves better than when it arrived. I just love the work you did on the Canfor Twins. Can't wait to see the new design.
Thanx Thom...
That is quite a different color scheme. I always liked that yellow. Interesting to see what you do with this one. If anyone can pull it off you sure can.
It's also a shame to see all your great work put into a locomotive, then find a blunder like the two barrels. I'd hate myself!

I'll be following along also. The two barrels the owner added really take away from the look. However, from seeing your work the repair will be an easy fix.

The difference between the almost right word and the right is the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.
Thanks everyone. I fixed the paint job around the two barrels
Just a little paint and a fine-tipped brush.
I also made some good progress on the red/silver engine:
Since I'm making two of the same engine again, I made both dynamic brake boxes and the air tanks at the same time. This one is in primer, waiting for its first coat of red.
I was supposed to get the second Proto engine today but the modeller accidentally brought his Rapido SW1200rs instead. That worked out okay since that engine needed some repairs:
The owner decided to add figures to the cab and when he took the engine apart, he damaged the side handrails, then he placed the engine in the wrong box, damaging the end rails.
He tried to fix it with Ca but made more of a mess so I offered to take it home and work on it. While we were looking it over one of the exhaust stacks fell off as well
I mixed up some epoxy and glued the handrail stantions and the exhaust stack back on.
Then I scraped the Ca glue off the handrail and rear pilot. I re-drilled the hole for the handrail (Rapido was smart enough to make them out of metal) and glued it back in with some epoxy. It still looks gluey on the left side but I've been given permission to weather the engine to hide it. I normally would just go ahead and weather the unit but I figure something that's worth 300$ should be given the go-ahead.
I painted the red on the Canfor engine this afternoon:
I used Model master Caboose red. Not an exact match but the closest I have in my paint collection. In a few days I'll be able to mask off the red and airbrush the silver. The black dividing stripes will probably be decals.
I also cleaned up and then weathered the Rapido engine:
I lightly airbrushed any shiny glue marks that were left over from repairs with Tru-line CP Tuscan. That turned out to be an almost exact match for the factory colors. then I weathered the trucks, walkways, fuel tank, pilots and couplers with various acrylics. I also noticed that the front pilot steps are missing and the owner is going to try to order those parts from Rapido.
