  • Genesis F3 bulb removal

I am wanting to replace the bulbs in my Genesis F3 units with LEDs. First off, how do you remove the factory bulbs? I'm trying not to destroy things, so I'm hoping surely, (and don't call me Shirley) someone has done this before. Also I'm looking for the best LEDs to replace the old bulbs. Will a 3 mm LED fit headlight hole? Maybe SMDs. How have others accomplished this task with results they are happy with? Thanks....John

I did a sound decoder install here and mounted two LED's in the light sockets; http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/t...TOPIC_ID=30380

John, when you get the shell off pull the light bulbs out of the light socket, depending on if you have dual lights or twin lights, or even single lights. Each one pulls out. Replace with 3mm LED's, most times they will slide right in, but enlarging the hole will not hurt.

Thanks Louis. I was somewhat reluctant to just grab the headlight wires and pull. But I guess that is what works. Maybe a little twisting won't hurt. I was getting my LEDs thru Ulrich but they are no longer in business. Any suggestions on a good supplier? By the way, in taking apart the trucks to free the brass piece that collects current from the axles, I noticed not a speck of lubricant on any gears. They are as dry as the Sahara. I freed up the brass piece for soldering as the factory wires were connected with the plastic push on caps. But of course you have already done this. I hope I can light up the number boards also. Maybe a surface mount LED will work here.

John I mostly get my LED's from Miniatronics Corp. through Walthers.com, or a shop close to my area called Traintek LLC http://www.traintekllc.com/

You have many large electronics manufactures out there that sell in bulk cheap, www.mouser.com and www.digikey.com just to name a few. Also, our members go through many shops they prefer, but for my use I just go to Walthers and add LED's when I place an order.

Thanks again Louis. Traintek had one of LEDs I was looking for. Just for those reading this post, I found another LED supplier. MCM Electronics. Warm white, 3mm (T1) LEDs for 55 cents each. Down side is shipping at $7.99. However, they do have a ton of other stuff that might offset the shipping cost with a large order. Another outlet for ESU decoders and supplies is WWW.ajckids.com. These folks are plum reasonable. Their shipping is $7.50 on smaller items but this is one day (overnight shipping). I ordered at noon on Friday and had my package the very next day. Please note I do not own any part of nor am I employed by any of the afore mentioned suppliers.
