    Erie Main Line Memories

    Hello, Everyone...

    This board needs to get a jumpstart. Anyone out there that remembers the Erie BEFORE the merger? I was raised in Hawthorne, NJ right on the main line...used to play on the tracks. Lots of RS3 and GEEP memories!

    That was in 1960, right? I remember seeing Camelbacks operating in Newark, NJ as a kid in the early 50's, But they were probably CNJ.
    We may be the only ones here, Russ. I seem to hear crickets. But I will post a question anyway: I've asked this question in other Erie forums with no luck. Below is a photo I took at the Port Jervis, NY station in approximately the mid 60's. It's an outside, trackside, etched glass door panel. Has anyone seen this logo before, or know anything about it?




    To put the photo in context, below is a shot of that door on the right. The left-hand door has already been trashed.

    The station was heavily vandalized back then. I have heard that it is now a restaurant. Wonder if that door stil exists.

      Hey, Dave...

      Yeah, it's pretty sleepy on these fallen flag boards. I've heard of this artwork before but know nothing about it. Maybe the EL His & Tech folks do. I'll check out Geo. Elwood's site later. I also have some B&W photos I have to scan and post here.

        I came across this other shot I took at at Port Jervis ca. 1971. Note the herald and roof walk on the caboose.

          Hey, Dave!

          No, don't live in NJ anymore, and haven't since 1971. I'm close by, though, in CT. My younger brother lives in Newton and we're both graduates of Pompton Lakes HS. He went to Ramapo College, I went to Navy boot camp. I'm going to visit him sometime between now and Christmas [:-dunce] if I can keep my schedule straight between work and home life. Thanks for asking!

              Guys,

              My grandfather used to man a crossing gate for the Erie in Paterson, NJ. That is him on the right, next to his shanty. I think that there is a handcar behind them.

                MY grandfather was a LV employee. He worked in their NYC offices apparently as a purchasing agent. He died when I was quite young, but he used to talk about locomotives with me and how much they cost.

                Was a suit and tie the standard for crossing guards back then? What year was the picture taken?

                  Hi Guys . I grew up in the Passaic , Clifton area I remember my grandmother tell the storie of her father working in the elavated train house working the switches lights on the main line of the Erie Lackawana just before Monrowe st in Passaic when the line went threw downton Passaic into the station and on across the Passaic river

                    Hello, Wayne...

                    I'm from Hawthorne myself. Ah, Passaic! When I was a young 'un my parents would take me to Passaic on the train for shopping trips on Main Street. That was when the tracks ran right through the center of town. My father's side of the family is from Garfield.

                              It's neat seeing these old pictures now that I work on the Main and Bergen lines.

                              The Newark Broad St. station is now all high level platforms.

                              Hoboken looks like it hasn't changed much since that late 70's picture although Hurricane Sandy's damage is still very evident.

                              They just opened the bathrooms in the main waiting room about two weeks ago.

                              I'm guessing the MU's we use today replaced the ones seen in the pictures.

                              The current ones are about 30 years old.

                              It's my understanding that NJ Transit is looking at replacing them.
